THE COMMISSIONING OF THE TWELVE
Matthew 10:1-16
L
1 And he called to him
his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast
them out, and to heal every disease and every infirmity.

2 The names of the twelve
apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother;
James the son of Zeb'edee, and John his brother;
3 Philip and Bartholomew;
Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;
4 Simon the Cananaean,
and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

5 These twelve Jesus
sent out, charging them, "Go nowhere among the Gentiles,
and enter no town of the Samaritans,
6
but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
7
And preach as you go, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'
8
Heal
the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received
without paying, give without pay.
9
Take no gold, nor silver, nor copper in your belts,
10
no bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor a staff; for
the laborer deserves his food.
11
And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it, and
stay with him until you depart.
12
As you enter the house, salute it.
13
And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not
worthy, let your peace return to you.
14
And if any one will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off
the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town.
15
Truly, I say to you, it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment
for the land of Sodom and Gomor'rah than for that town.
16
"Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be wise as
serpents and innocent as doves. |

them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.

13 And he went up on
the mountain, and called to him those whom he desired; and they came to
him.
14 And he appointed twelve,
to be with him, and to be sent out to preach
15 and have authority
to cast out demons:
16 Simon whom he surnamed
Peter;
17 James the son of Zeb'edee
and John the brother of James, whom he surnamed Bo-aner'ges, that is, sons
of thunder;
18 Andrew, and Philip,
and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus,
and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean,
19 and Judas Iscariot,
who betrayed him.

THE COMMISSION
OF THE SEVENTY
L
Luke
10:1-16
L
1
After this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them on ahead of
him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to
come.
2
And he said to them, "The harvest is plentiful,
but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send
out laborers into his harvest.
3
Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.
4
Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and salute no one on the road.
5
Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace be to this house!'
6
And if a son of peace is there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if
not, it shall return to you.
7
And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for
the laborer deserves his wages; do not go from house to house.
8
Whenever
you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you;
9
heal the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near
to you.'
10
But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its
streets and say,
11
'Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off against
you; nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.'
12
I tell you, it shall be more tolerable on that day for Sodom than for that
town.
13
"Woe to you, Chora'zin! woe to you, Beth-sa'ida! for if the mighty works
done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long
ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
14
But it shall be more tolerable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than
for you.
15
And you, Caper'na-um, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought
down to Hades.
16
"He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who
rejects me rejects him who sent me."
L
Luke
10:17-22
L
17
The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject
to us in your name!"
18
And he said to them, "I saw Satan fall like
lightning from heaven.
19
Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions,
and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you.
20
Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you;
but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."
21
In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, "I
thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these
things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yea,
Father, for such was thy gracious will.
22
All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows who
the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and any
one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." |
THE GREAT COMMISSION
Matthew 28:16-20
L
16 Now the eleven disciples
went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.
17 And when they saw
him they worshiped him; but some doubted.
18 And Jesus came and
said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth
has been given to me.
19
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with
you always, to the close of the age." |
Mark 16:14-20
L
14 Afterward he appeared
to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for
their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those
who saw him after he had risen.
L
L
L
L
15 And he said to them,
"Go
into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation.
16
He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe
will be condemned. |
Luke 24:44-48
L
44 Then he said to them,
"These
are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything
written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must
be fulfilled."
45 Then he opened their
minds to understand the scriptures,
46 and said to them,
"Thus
it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise
from the dead,
47
and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name
to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
48
You
are witnesses of these things. |

1:6-8

6
So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this
time restore the kingdom to Israel?"

L
7
He said to them, "It is not for you to know
times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority.
8
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and
you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Sama'ria and
to the end of the earth." |
