| ON THE SON OF MAN Here
are collected all utterances of Jesus
that incorporate the New Testament Greek term, o
uios
tou anqropou, which
is, translated, the son of man. This is the Lord's preferred
designation
of himself in all of the canonical gospels.
The
definition, as given by Thayer1 is:
o uios tou anqropou -- The title, the son of man, is used by Jesus of himself (speaking in the third person) doubtless in order that he might intimate his messiaship . . . .. The
corresponding
English words are colored in blue where it occurs in the English text
below.

| A BEATITUDE |
| Matt.5 [11] Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. |
M |
Luke.6 [22] Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, on account of the Son of man! |
| [12] Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you. | [23] Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. |
| NO EXCUSES! |
| Matt.8 [18] Now when Jesus saw great crowds around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. |
Mark 4 [35] On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, Let us go across to the other side. |
Luke.9 |
| [19] And a scribe came up and said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." | [57] As they were going along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." | |
| [20] And Jesus said to him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head. | [58] And Jesus said to him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head. | |
| [21] Another of the disciples said to him, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father." | [59] To another he said, Follow me. But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father." | |
| [22] But Jesus said to him, Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead. | [60] But he said to him, Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God. | |
| [61]
Another
said, "I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those
at my home." [62] Jesus said to him, No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God. |
| A PARALYTIC HEALED |
| Matt.9 [1] And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. |
Mark.2 [1] And when he returned to Caper'na-um after some days, it was reported that he was at home. |
Luke.5 |
| [2] And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, not even about the door; and he was preaching the word to them. | [17] On one of those days, as he was teaching, there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was with him to heal. | |
| [2] And behold, they brought to him a paralytic, lying on his bed; | [3] And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. | [18] And behold, men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they sought to bring him in and lay him before Jesus; |
| [4] And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. | [19] but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. | |
| and when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic, Take heart, child; your sins are forgiven. | [5] And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, Child, your sins are forgiven. | [20]
And when
he saw their faith he said, Man, your sins are forgiven you. |
| [3] And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." | [6]
Now some
of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, [7] "Why does this man speak thus? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" |
[21] And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, "Who is this that speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God only?" |
| [4]
But
Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, Why do you think evil in your hearts? |
[8]
And
immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned
within themselves, said to them, Why do you question thus in your hearts? |
[22]
When
Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered them, Why do you question in your hearts? |
| [5] For which is easier, to say, `Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, `Rise and walk'? | [9] Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, `Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, `Rise, take up your pallet and walk'? | [23] Which is easier, to say, `Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, `Rise and walk'? |
| [6] But
that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins -- he then said to the paralytic -- Rise, take up your bed and go home. |
[10]
But that you may know that
the Son of man has
authority on
earth to forgive sins -- he said to the paralytic -- [11] I say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home. |
[24]
But that you may know that
the Son of man has
authority on
earth to forgive sins" -- he said
to the man who was paralyzed -- I say to you, rise, take up your bed and go home. |
| [7]
And he
rose and went home. [8] When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men. |
[12]
And he rose, and immediately took up the pallet and went out before
them all; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!" |
[25]
And
immediately he rose before them, and took up that on which he lay, and
went home, glorifying God. [26] And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, "We have seen strange things today." |
| BEWARE OF MEN |
| Matt.10 [17] Beware of men; for they will deliver you up to councils, and flog you in their synagogues, [18] and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear testimony before them and the Gentiles. [19] When they deliver you up, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour; [20] for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. [21] Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; [22] and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved. [23] When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel, before the Son of man comes. |

| FEARLESS CONFESSION |
| Matt.10 [26] So have no fear of
them; for nothing is
covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.
|
M |
Luke.12
[2] Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. |
| [27] What I tell you in the dark, utter in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim upon the housetops. | [3] Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. | |
| [28] And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; | [4] I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. | |
rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. |
[5] But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear him!
| [29] Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father's will. | [6] Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. | |
| [30] But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. | [7] Why,
even the hairs of your
head are all numbered. |
|
| [31] Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. | Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows. | |
| [32]
So every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; |
[8] And I tell you, every one who acknowledges me before men, the Son of man also will acknowledge before the angels of God;
| [33] but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven | [9] but he who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. |
| THIS GENERATION |
| Matt.11 [16] But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places and calling to their playmates, |
M |
Luke.7 [31] To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like? [32] They are like children sitting in the market place and calling to one another, |
| [17] `We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.' | `We piped to you, and
you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep.' |
|
| [18] For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, `He has a demon'; | [33] For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine; and you say, `He has a demon.' | |
| [19] the Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, `Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' | [34] The Son of man has come eating and drinking; and you say, `Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' | |
| Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds. | [35] Yet wisdom is justified by all her children. |
| THE LORD OF THE SABBATH |
| Matt.12 [1] At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the sabbath; his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. |
Mark.2 [23] One sabbath he was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. |
Luke.6 [1] On a sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. |
| [2] But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, "Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath." | [24]
And the
Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?" |
[2]
But some
of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath?" |
| [3]
He said
to them, Have you not read what David did, when he was hungry, and those who were with him: |
[25]
And he
said to them, Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: |
[3] And Jesus answered, Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: |
| [4]
how he entered the house of
God and ate
the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? |
[26] how he entered the house of God, when Abi'athar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him? | [4] how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him? |
| [5] Or have you not read in the law how on the sabbath the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are guiltless? | ||
| [6] I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. | ||
| [7] And if you had known what this means, `I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless. | ||
[8] For the Son of man is lord of the sabbath. |
[27]
And he
said to them, The sabbath was
made for man, not man for the sabbath; [28] so the Son of man is lord even of the sabbath. |
[5]
And he
said to them, The Son of man is lord of the sabbath. |
| SIN AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT |
| Matt.12 [31] Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. |
Mark.3 [28] Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter; |
Luke.12 |
| [32] And whoever says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. | [29] but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin -- | [10] And every one who speaks a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. |
| [33] Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. | ||
| [30] for they had said, "He has an unclean spirit." |
| THE SIGN OF JONAH |
| Matt.12 [38] Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, "Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you." |
Luke.11 [16] while others, to test him, sought from him a sign from heaven. |
|
| [39] But he answered them, An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign; but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. | [12] And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation. | [29] When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah. |
| [40] For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. | [30] For as Jonah became a sign to the men of Nin'eveh, so will the Son of man be to this generation. | |
| [41] The men of Nin'eveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. | [32] The men of Nin'eveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. | |
| [42] The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. | [31] The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. |
| THE PARABLE OF THE TARES |
| Matt.13 [36] Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field." [37] He answered, He who sows the good seed is the Son of man; [38] the field is the world, and the good seed means the sons of the kingdom; the weeds are the sons of the evil one, [39] and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the close of the age, and the reapers are angels. [40] Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the close of the age. [41] The Son of man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, [42] and throw them into the furnace of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth. [43] Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. |

| WHO IS THE SON OF MAN? |
| Matt.16 [13] Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesare'a Philip'pi, he asked his disciples, |
Mark.8 [27] And Jesus went on with his disciples, to the villages of Caesare'a Philip'pi; and on the way he asked his disciples, |
Luke.9 [18] Now it happened that as he was praying alone the disciples were with him; and he asked them, |
| Who do men say that the Son of man is? | Who do men say that I am? | Who do the people say that I am? |
| [14] And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Eli'jah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." | [28] And they told him, "John the Baptist; and others say, Eli'jah; and others one of the prophets." | [19] And they answered, "John the Baptist; but others say, Eli'jah; and others, that one of the old prophets has risen." |
| [15] He said to them, But who do you say that I am? | [29] And he asked them, But who do you say that I am? | [20] And he said to them, But who do you say that I am? |
| [16] Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." | Peter answered him, "You are the Christ." | And Peter answered, "The Christ of God." |
| [17] And Jesus answered him, Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. | ||
| [18] And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. | ||
| [19] I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. | ||
| [20] Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. | [30]
And he
charged them to tell no one about him. |
[21] But he charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, |
| HIS PASSION FORETOLD |
| Matt.16 [21] From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. |
Mark.8 [31] And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. |
Luke.9 [22] saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. |
| [22] And Peter took him and began to rebuke him, saying, "God forbid, Lord! This shall never happen to you." | [32]
And he
said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. |
|
| [23] But he turned and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me; for you are not on the side of God, but of men. | [33] But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men. |
| THE GREAT PRINCIPLE |
| Matt.16 [24] Then Jesus told his disciples, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. |
Mark.8 [34] And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. |
Luke.9 [23] And he said to all, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. |
| [25] For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. | [35] For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. | [24] For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake, he will save it. |
| [26] For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? | [36] For what does it profit a man, to gain
the whole world and forfeit his life? [37] For what can a man give in return for his life? |
[25] For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? |
[27] For the Son of man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay every man for what he has done. |
[38] For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. | [26]
For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. |
| [28] Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. | 9:[1] And he said to them, Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power. | [27] But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God." |
| THE TRANSFIGURATION |
| Matt.17 [1] And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain apart. |
Mark.9 [2] And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves; |
Luke.9 [28] Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. |
| [2] And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light. | and
he was
transfigured before them, [3] and his garments became glistening, intensely white, as no fuller on earth could bleach them. |
[29] And as he was praying, the appearance of his countenance was altered, and his raiment became dazzling white. |
| [3] And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Eli'jah, talking with him. | [4] And there appeared to them Eli'jah with Moses; and they were talking to Jesus. | [30] And behold, two men talked with him, Moses and Eli'jah, |
| [31] who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was to accomplish at Jerusalem. | ||
| [32] Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, and when they wakened they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. | ||
| [4] And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is well that we are here; if you wish, I will make three booths here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Eli'jah." | [5] And Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is well that we are here; let us make three booths, one for you and one for Moses and one for Eli'jah." [6] For he did not know what to say, for they were exceedingly afraid. | [33] And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is well that we are here; let us make three booths, one for you and one for Moses and one for Eli'jah" -- not knowing what he said. |
| [5] He was still speaking, when lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. | [7]
And a
cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, This is my beloved Son; listen to him. |
[34]
As he
said this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were afraid as
they entered the cloud. [35] And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him! |
| [6] When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, and were filled with awe. | |
|
| [7] But Jesus came and touched them, saying, Rise, and have no fear. | ||
| [8] And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. | [8] And suddenly looking around they no longer saw any one with them but Jesus only. | [36]
And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. |
| [9] And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, Tell no one the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead. | [9] And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of man should have risen from the dead. | |
| [10] So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what the rising from the dead meant. | And they kept silence and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen. | |
| [10] And the disciples asked him, "Then why do the scribes say that first Eli'jah must come?" | [11] And they asked him, "Why do the scribes say that first Eli'jah must come?" | |
| [11] He replied, Eli'jah does come, and he is to restore all things; | [12]
And he said to them, Eli'jah does
come first to restore all things; |
|
| and how is it written of the Son of man, that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? | ||
| [12] but I tell you that Eli'jah has already come, and they did not know him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of man will suffer at their hands. | [13] But I tell you that Eli'jah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him. | |
| [13] Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist. |
| THE SECOND PREDICTION |
| Matt.17 [22] As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, |
Mark.9 [30] They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; [31] for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, |
Luke.9 [43] And all were astonished at the majesty of God. But while they were all marveling at everything he did, he said to his disciples, |
| The
Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, [23] and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day. |
The
Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they
will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise." |
[44]
Let these words sink into
your ears;
for the Son of man is
to be delivered into the hands of men. |
| And they were greatly distressed. | [32] But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to ask him. | [45] But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying. |
| THE CAMEL AND THE NEEDLE |
| Matt.19 [23] And Jesus said to his disciples, Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. |
Mark.10 [23] And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God. |
Luke.18 [24] Jesus looking at him said, How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! |
| [24] And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! | ||
| [24] Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. | [25] It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. | [25] For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. |
| [25] When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?" | [26] And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, "Then who can be saved?" | [26] Those who heard it said, "Then who can be saved?" |
| [26] But Jesus looked at them and said to them, With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. | [27] Jesus looked at them and said, With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God. | [27]
But he
said, What is impossible with men is possible with God. |
| [27] Then Peter said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?" | [28] Peter began to say to him, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you." | [28] And Peter said, "Lo, we have left our homes and followed you." |
| [28] Jesus said to them, Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. | ||
| [29] And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, | [29] Jesus said, Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, | [29] And he said to them, Truly, I say to you, there is no man who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, |
| will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. |
[30] who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. | [30]
who will not receive
manifold more in
this time, and in the age to come eternal life. |
| [30] But many that are first will be last, and the last first. | [31] But many that are first will be last, and the last first. |
| THE THIRD PREDICTION |
| Matt.20 [17] And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, |
Mark.10 [32] And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, |
Luke.18 [31] And taking the twelve, he said to them, |
| [18]
Behold, we are going up to
Jerusalem; |
[33] saying, Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; | Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, |
| and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death, | and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, | and everything that is written of the Son of man
by the prophets will be accomplished. |
| [19] and deliver him to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day. | and deliver him to
the Gentiles; [34] and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise. |
[32]
For he will be delivered to
the
Gentiles, and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon; [33] they will scourge him and kill him, and on the third day he will rise. |
| [34] But they understood none of these things; this saying was hid from them, and they did not grasp what was said. |
| WHO IS GREATEST? |
| Matt.20 [20] Then the mother of the sons of Zeb'edee came up to him, with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. |
Mark.10 [35] And James and John, the sons of Zeb'edee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." |
Luke.22 [24] A dispute also arose among them, which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. |
| [21] And he said to her, What do you want? She said to him, "Command that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom." | [36]
And he
said to them, What do you want me
to do for you? [37] And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." |
|
| [22]
But
Jesus answered, You do not know
what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?
|
[38] But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?
| They said to him, "We are able." | [39] And they said to him, "We are able." | |
| [23]
He said
to them, You will drink my cup, |
And Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized;
| but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father. | [40] but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared. | |
| [24] And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. | [41] And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. | |
| [25] But Jesus called them to him and said, You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. | [42] And Jesus called them to him and said to them, You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. | [25] And he said to them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors |
| [26] It shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, | [43] But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, | [26]
But not so with you; rather
let the
greatest among you become as the youngest, |
| [27] and whoever would be first among you must be your slave; | [44] and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. | and the leader as one who serves. |
[28] even as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. |
[45] For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. |
[27] For which is the greater, one who sits at table, or one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at table? But I am among you as one who serves. |
| THE SON OF MAN COMING |
| Matt.24 [23] Then if any one says to you, `Lo, here is the Christ!' or `There he is!' do not believe it. |
Mark.13 [21] And then if any one says to you, `Look, here is the Christ!' or `Look, there he is!' do not believe it. |
Luke.17 [22] And he said to the disciples, The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and you will not see it. [23] And they will say to you, `Lo, there!' or `Lo, here!' Do not go, do not follow them. |
| [24] For false Christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. | [22] False Christs and false prophets will arise and show signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. | |
| [25] Lo, I have told you beforehand. | [23] But take heed; I have told you all things beforehand. | |
| [26] So, if they say to you, `Lo, he is in the wilderness,' do not go out; if they say, `Lo, he is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. | ||
| [27] For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of man. | [24] For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of man be in his day. | |
| [28] Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together. | Luke.21 |

| [29]
Immediately after the
tribulation of
those days the sun will be
darkened, and the moon will not give its light, |
[24] But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, | [25]
And there will be signs in
sun and moon
and stars, and upon the earth distress of nations in perplexity at the
roaring of the sea and the waves, |
| and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken; | [25] and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. | [26] men fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. |
| [30] then will appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory; | [26] And then they will see the Son of man coming in clouds with great power and glory. |
[27] And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. [28] Now when these things begin to take place, look up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. |
| [31] and he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. | [27] And then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. | |
| [32] From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. | [28] From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. | |
| [33] So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. | [29] So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. | |
| [34] Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away till all these things take place. | [30] Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away before all these things take place. | |
| [35] Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. | [31] Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. | |
| [36] But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. | [32] But of that day or that hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. | |
| [33]
Take heed, watch; for you do
not know
when the time will come. [34] It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. |
||
| [37] As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of man. | [26] As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of man. | |
| [38] For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, | [27] They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, | |
| [39] and they did not know until the flood
came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of man. |
and the flood came and destroyed them
all. [28] Likewise as it was in the days of Lot -- they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built, [29] but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom fire and sulphur rained from heaven and destroyed them all -- [30] so will it be on the day when the Son of man is revealed. |
|
| [40] Then two men will be in the field; one is taken and one is left. | ||
| [41] Two women will be grinding at the mill; one is taken and one is left. | ||
| [42] Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. | [35] Watch therefore -- for you do not
know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at
midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning -- [36] lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. |
Luke.12 |
| [43] But know this, that if the householder had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched and would not have let his house be broken into. | [39] But
know this, that if the householder
had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his
house to be broken into. |
|
| [44] Therefore you also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect. | [40] You also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an unexpected hour. | |
| [37] And what I say to you I say to all: Watch. |
| THE UNJUST JUDGE |

Luke.18 [1] And he told them a parable, to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. [2] He said, In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor regarded man; [3] and there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, `Vindicate me against my adversary.' [4] For a while he refused; but afterward he said to himself, `Though I neither fear God nor regard man, [5] yet because this widow bothers me, I will vindicate her, or she will wear me out by her continual coming.' [6] And the Lord said, Hear what the unrighteous judge says. [7] And will not God vindicate his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? [8] I tell you, he will vindicate them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on earth? |
| ZACCHAEUS |

Luke.19 [1] He entered Jericho and was passing through. [2] And there was a man named Zacchae'us; he was a chief tax collector, and rich. [3] And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. [4] So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. [5] And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, Zacchae'us, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today. [6] So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. [7] And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." [8] And Zacchae'us stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." [9] And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. [10] For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost. |
| TAKE HEED, WATCH! |

M |
Luke.21 [34] But take heed to yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a snare; [35] for it will come upon all who dwell upon the face of the whole earth. [36] But watch at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of man. |
| THE LAST JUDGMENT |
| Matt.25 [31] When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. [32] Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, [33] and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. [34] Then the King will say to those at his right hand, `Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; [35] for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, [36] I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' [37] Then the righteous will answer him, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? [38] And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? [39] And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?' [40] And the King will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' [41] Then he will say to those at his left hand, `Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; [42] for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, [43] I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' [44] Then they also will answer, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?' [45] Then he will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.' [46] And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. |
