FROM THE SYNOPTIC GOSPELS
JUDGE WHAT IS RIGHT!
Matt. 5
[25] Make friends
quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest
your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and
you be put in prison;
[26] truly, I
say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny. |
M |
Luke 12
[57] "And why
do you not judge for yourselves what is right?
[58] As you go
with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with
him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over
to the officer, and the officer put you in prison.
[59] I tell you,
you will never get out till you have paid the very last copper." |
THE
SUN AND THE RAIN
Matt.5
[43] You have heard that it was said, `You
shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'
[44] But I say to you, Love your enemies and
pray for those who persecute you,
[45] so that you may be sons of your Father
who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good,
and sends rain on the just
and on the unjust.
[46] For if you love those who love you, what
reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
[47] And if you salute only your brethren,
what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
[48] You, therefore, must be perfect, as your
heavenly Father is perfect. |
M
|
Luke 6
[27] But I say to you that hear, Love your
enemies, do good to those who hate you,
[28] bless those who curse you, pray for those
who abuse you.
.
.
.
.
.
[32] "If you
love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love
those who love them.
[33] And if you
do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even
sinners do the same.
[34] And if you
lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you?
Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
[35] But love
your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your
reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is
kind to the ungrateful and the selfish.
[36] Be merciful,
even as your Father is merciful. |
NOT TO
CALL THE RIGHTEOUS
Matt.9
.
.
.
.
[9] As Jesus passed on from there, he saw
a man called Matthew sitting at the tax office; and he said to him, "Follow
me." And he rose and followed him.
[10] And as he sat at table in the house,
behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Jesus and
his disciples.
[11] And when the Pharisees saw this, they
said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and
sinners?"
[12] But when he heard it, he said,
"Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
[13] Go and learn
what this means, `I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.' For I came not to
call the righteous,
but sinners." |
Mark 2
[13] He went out again beside the sea; and all the crowd gathered
about him, and he taught them.
[14] And as he passed on, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting
at the tax office, and he said to him, "Follow me."
And he rose and followed him.
[15] And as he sat at table in his house, many tax collectors and
sinners were sitting with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many
who followed him.
[16] And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was
eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, "Why does
he eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
[17] And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, "Those
who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I came
not to call the righteous,
but sinners." |
Luke 5
.
.
.
.
[27] After this he went out, and saw a tax collector, named Levi,
sitting at the tax office; and he said to him, "Follow
me."
[28] And he left everything, and rose and followed him.
[29] And Levi made him a great feast in his house; and there was
a large company of tax collectors and others sitting at table with them.
[30] And the Pharisees and their scribes murmured against his disciples,
saying, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?"
[31] And Jesus answered them, "Those who are
well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick;
[32] I have not
come to call the righteous,
but sinners to repentance." |
THE RIGHTEOUS MAN'S REWARD
Matt.10
[40] "He who receives
you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me.
[41] He who receives
a prophet because he is a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward, and
he who receives a righteous
man because he is a righteous
man shall receive a righteous
man's reward.
[42] And whoever
gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is
a disciple, truly, I say to you, he shall not lose his reward." |

PROPHETS AND RIGHTEOUS MEN
Matt.13
[16] But blessed
are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.
[17] Truly, I
say to you, many prophets and righteous
men longed to see what you see, and did not see it and to hear what
you hear, and did not hear it. |
M |
Luke.10
[23] Then turning to the disciples he said
privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see
what you see!
[24] For I tell
you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not
see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it." |
THEN THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE
Matt.13
[36] Then he left
the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying,
"Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field."
[37] He answered,
"He who sows the good seed is the Son of man;
[38] the field
is the world, and the good seed means the sons of the kingdom; the weeds
are the sons of the evil one,
[39] and the
enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the close of the age,
and the reapers are angels.
[40] Just as
the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the close
of the age.
[41] The Son
of man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all
causes of sin and all evildoers,
[42] and throw
them into the furnace of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.
[43] Then the
righteous
will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears,
let him hear. |

SEPARATING
THE EVIL FROM THE RIGHTEOUS
Matt.13
[47] "Again, the
kingdom of heaven is like a net which was thrown into the sea and gathered
fish of every kind;
[48] when it
was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into vessels
but threw away the bad.
[49] So it will
be at the close of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil
from the righteous,
[50] and throw
them into the furnace of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth. |

THE
RESURRECTION OF THE JUST
M |
M |
Luke.14
[7] Now he told
a parable to those who were invited, when he marked how they chose the
places of honor, saying to them,
[8] "When you
are invited by any one to a marriage feast, do not sit down in a place
of honor, lest a more eminent man than you be invited by him;
[9] and he who
invited you both will come and say to you, `Give place to this man,' and
then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place.
[10] But when
you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host
comes he may say to you, `Friend, go up higher'; then you will be honored
in the presence of all who sit at table with you.
[11] For every
one who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will
be exalted."
[12] He said
also to the man who had invited him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet,
do not invite your friends or your brothers or your kinsmen or rich neighbors,
lest they also invite you in return, and you be repaid.
[13] But when
you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind,
[14] and you
will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the
resurrection of the just." |
THE
RIGHTEOUS AND JOY IN HEAVEN
MATT. 18
.
.
.
.
.
.
[12] What do
you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray,
does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of
the one that went astray?
[13] And if he
finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine
that never went astray.
.
.
.
[14] So it is
not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones
should perish. |
M |
LUKE 15
[1] Now the tax collectors and sinners were
all drawing near to hear him.
[2] And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured,
saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them."
[3] So he told them this parable:
[4] "What man
of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave
the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost,
until he finds it?
[5] And when
he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
[6] And when
he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying
to them, `Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.'
[7] Just so,
I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents
than over ninety-nine righteous
persons who need no repentance.
[8] "Or what
woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a
lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it?
[9] And when
she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying,
`Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost.'
[10] Just so,
I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents." |
WHO
IS RIGHTEOUS?
M |
M |
Luke 18
[9] He also told this parable to some who trusted
in themselves that they were righteous
and despised others:
[10] "Two men
went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
[11] The Pharisee
stood and prayed thus with himself, `God, I thank thee that I am not like
other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
[12] I fast twice
a week, I give tithes of all that I get.'
[13] But the
tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven,
but beat his breast, saying, `God, be merciful to me a sinner!'
[14] I tell you,
this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for every
one who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will
be exalted." |
WHATEVER
IS RIGHT
Matt. 20:1-16
[1] "For the kingdom
of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire
laborers for his vineyard.
[2] After agreeing
with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
[3] And going
out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place;
[4] and to them
he said, `You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right
I will give you.' So they went.
[5] Going out
again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same.
[6] And about
the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing; and he said to
them, `Why do you stand here idle all day?'
[7] They said
to him, `Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, `You go into the
vineyard too.'
[8] And when
evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, `Call the
laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.'
[9] And when
those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius.
[10] Now when
the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them
also received a denarius.
[11] And on receiving
it they grumbled at the householder,
[12] saying,
`These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who
have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.'
[13] But he replied
to one of them, `Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with
me for a denarius?
[14] Take what
belongs to you, and go; I choose to give to this last as I give to you.
[15] Am I not
allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge
my generosity?'
[16] So the last
will be first, and the first last." |

THE
MONUMENTS OF THE RIGHTEOUS
Matt.23
[27] "Woe to you,
scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like whitewashed tombs,
which outwardly appear beautiful, but within they are full of dead men's
bones and all uncleanness.
[28] So you also
outwardly appear righteous
to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
[29] "Woe to
you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you build the tombs of the
prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,
[30] saying,
`If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part
with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'
[31] Thus you
witness against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the
prophets. |
M |
Luke.11
[44] Woe to you!
for you are like graves which are not seen, and men walk over them without
knowing it."
.
.
.
.
.
[47] Woe to you!
for you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed.
.
.
.
.
.
[48] So you are
witnesses and consent to the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them,
and you build their tombs. |
JUDGMENT
OF THE RIGHTEOUS AND THE CURSED
Matt.25
[31] "When the
Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will
sit on his glorious throne.
[32] Before him
will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another
as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats,
[33] and he will
place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left.
[34] Then the
King will say to those at his right hand, `Come, O blessed of my Father,
inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;
[35] for I was
hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was
a stranger and you welcomed me,
[36] I was naked
and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and
you came to me.'
[37] Then the
righteous
will answer him, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty
and give thee drink?
[38] And when
did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee?
[39] And when
did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?'
[40] And the
King will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the
least of these my brethren, you did it to me.'
[41] Then he
will say to those at his left hand, `Depart from me, you cursed, into the
eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels;
[42] for I was
hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
[43] I was a
stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick
and in prison and you did not visit me.'
[44] Then they
also will answer, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger
or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?'
[45] Then he
will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the
least of these, you did it not to me.'
[46] And they
will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous
into eternal life." |
