A Prayer
of Jesus
I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will.
ON THE MYSTERY

Here are collected all the utterances of Jesus that incorporate the Greek words, mustarion, kruptos and apokruphos and their forms. The definitions, as given by Thayer1 for mustarion are a hidden thing, secret, mystery, for kruptos, hidden, concealed, secret and for apokruphos, hidden, secreted.  The English translations most often render them as secret, hidden, and mystery. The corresponding English word is colored in purple where it occurs in the English text below.

From mustarion comes the English words mystery, mysterious, mystic and mystical.  From kruptos comes the English words crypt, cryptographic, cryptic.  The definitions indicate that the words can be used interchangeably, but the view here is that there is a definite but subtle difference in the words.  Mustarion should not be rendered secret and krupton should not be rendered mystery in the New Testament gospels as some translators have rendered them. Kruptos indicates a thing actively hidden so as to keep it secret from others, whereas mustarion indicates that which is by nature difficult to understand.

INSTRUCTIONS ON PIETY
Matt. 6

[1] "Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
[2] "Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
[3] But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
[4] so that your alms may be in secret (kruptos); and your Father who sees in secret (kruptos) will reward you.
[5] "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
[6] But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; (kruptos) and your Father who sees in secret (kruptos) will reward you.
[7] "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
[8] Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

[16] "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
[17] But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
[18] that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret (kruptos); and your Father who sees in secret (kruptos) will reward you.

NOTHING HIDDEN
Matt. 10

[26] So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden(kruptos) that will not be known.

[12] For to him who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

Matt. 5

[14] You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid(krubanai).
[15] Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.

Mark 4

[21] And he said to them, "Is a lamp brought in to be put under a bushel, or under a bed, and not on a stand?

[22] For there is nothing hid, (kruptos) except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret(apokruphon), except to come to light.
[23] If any man has ears to hear, let him hear."
[24] And he said to them, "Take heed what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you.
[25] For to him who has will more be given; and from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away."

Luke 8

[16] "No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, that those who enter may see the light.
[17] For nothing is hid (kruptos) that shall not be made manifest, nor anything secret(apokruphon) that shall not be known and come to light. (See also Luke 12:2)

[18] Take heed then how you hear;

for to him who has will more be given, and from him who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away."

Luke 11

[33] "No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar(kruptos) or under a bushel, but on a stand, that those who enter may see the light.

JESUS' THANKSGIVING
Matt. 11

[25] At that time Jesus declared, "I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden(apekruphas) these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes;
[26] yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will.
[27] All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

M
Luke 10

[21] In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, "I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and
earth, that thou hast hidden(apekruphas) these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will.
[22] All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."

THE MYSTERIES OF THE KINGDOM
Matt. 13

[10] Then the disciples came and said to him, "Why do you speak to them in parables?"

[11] And he answered them, "To you it has been given to know the secrets(mustarion) of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.

[13] This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.

[14] With them indeed is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah which says: `You shall indeed hear but never understand, and you shall indeed see but never perceive.
[15] For this people's heart has grown dull, and their ears are heavy of hearing,
and their eyes they have closed,
lest they should perceive with their eyes,
and hear with their ears,
and understand with their heart,
and turn for me to heal them.'

Mark 4

[10] And when he was alone, those who were about him with the twelve asked him concerning the parables.
[11] And he said to them, "To you has been given the secret(mustarion) of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables;
[12] so that they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand; lest they should turn again, and be forgiven."

Luke 8

[9] And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant,

[10] he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets(mustarion) of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables,

so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

THE PARABLE OF THE LEAVEN
Matt. 13

[33] He told them another parable. "The kingdom of heaven
is like leaven which a woman took and hid(enekruphen) in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened."

M
Luke 13

[20] And again he said, "To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?
[21] It is like leaven which a woman took and hid (enekruphen) in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened."

THE HIDDEN TREASURE
Matt. 13

[44]"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden (krupto) in a field, which a man found and covered up; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS
Matt. 25

[14] "For it will be as when a man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property;
[15] to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.
[16] He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them; and he made five talents more.
[17] So also, he who had the two talents made two talents more.
[18] But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money.

[19] Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.

[20] And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, `Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.'
[21] His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.'
[22] And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, `Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.'
[23] His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.'
[24] He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, `Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow;
[25] so I was afraid, and I went and hid (ekrupha) your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.'
[26] But his master answered him, `You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed?
[27] Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have
received what was my own with interest.
[28] So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents.

[29] For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
[30] And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.'

M
Luke 19

[12] He said therefore, "A nobleman went into a far country to receive a kingdom and then return.
[13] Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten pounds, and said to them, `Trade with these till I come.'

[14] But his citizens hated him and sent an embassy after him, saying, `We do not want this man to reign over us.'
[15] When he returned, having received the kingdom, he commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by trading.
[16] The first came before him, saying, `Lord, your pound has made ten pounds more.'

[17] And he said to him, `Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.'

[18] And the second came, saying, `Lord, your pound has made five pounds.'

[19] And he said to him, `And you are to be over five cities.'

[20] Then another came, saying, `Lord, here is your pound, which I kept laid away in a napkin;

[21] for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man; you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.'
[22] He said to him, `I will condemn you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?
[23] Why then did you not put my money into the bank, and at my coming I should have collected it with interest?'
[24] And he said to those who stood by, `Take the pound from him, and give it to him who has the ten pounds.'
[25] (And they said to him, `Lord, he has ten pounds!')
[26] `I tell you, that to every one who has will more be given; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
[27] But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.'"

HID FROM YOUR EYES
M
M
Luke 19

[39] And some of the Pharisees in the multitude said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples."
[40] He answered, "I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out."
[41] And when he drew near and saw the city he wept over it,
[42] saying, "Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace! But now they are hid (ekruba) from your eyes.
[43] For the days shall come upon you, when your enemies will cast up a bank about you and surround you, and hem you in on every side,
[44] and dash you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another in you; because you did not know the time of your visitation."

FROM THE FOURTH GOSPEL
John 18

[20] Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together; I have said nothing secretly (krupto)
