THE FAMILY DIVIDED
Matt.10
[34] Do
not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to
bring peace, but a sword.
[35] For I have come to set
a man against his father, and a daughter against
her mother, and a
daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
[36] and a man's foes will be those of his
own household.
[37] He
who loves father or mother
more
than me is not worthy of me; and he
who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
[38] and he who does not take his cross and
follow me is not worthy of me.
[39] He
who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for my sake
will find it.

[51] Do you think that I have come to give
peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division;
[52] for henceforth in one house there will
be five divided, three against two and two against three;
[53] they will be divided,
father against son and son against father, mother
against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother-in-law against
her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
Luke.14
[ 26] If any one comes to me and does not
hate his own father
and mother and wife and
children and brothers and sisters, yes, and
even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
[ 27] Whoever does not bear
his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
Luke.17
[33] Whoever seeks to gain his life will
lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it.

JESUS' DEFINES HIS FAMILY
Matt.12
[46] While
he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his
brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him.
[48] But he replied to the man who told him, Who is my mother, and who are my
brothers?
[49] And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, Here are my mother and my brothers!
[50] For whoever does the
will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.
|
Mark.3
[31] And his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside
they sent to him and called him.
[32] And a crowd was sitting about him; and they said to him,
"Your mother and your brothers are outside, asking for you."
[33] And he replied, Who
are my mother and my
brothers?
[34] And looking around on those who sat about him, he said, Here are my mother and my brothers!
[35] Whoever does the will
of God is my brother, and sister, and mother.
|
Luke.8
[19] Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they
could not reach him for the crowd.
[20] And he was told, "Your mother and your brothers are
standing outside, desiring to see you."
[21] But he said to them, My
mother and
my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.

HONOR YOUR FATHER AND
MOTHER
Matt.15
[1]
Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,
[2] "Why do your disciples transgress the
tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they
eat."
[3] He answered them, And why do you transgress the
commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?
[4] For
God commanded, `Honor your father and your mother,' and, `He who speaks
evil of father or mother, let him surely die.'
[5] But you say, `If any
one tells his father or his mother,
What you would
have gained from me is given to God, he need not honor his father.'
[6] So,
for the sake of your tradition, you have made void the word of God.
[7] You
hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
[8] `This people honors me with their lips,
but
their heart is far from me;
[9] in vain do they worship me,
teaching
as doctrines the precepts of men.'
|
Mark.7
[1] Now when the Pharisees gathered together to him, with some
of the scribes, who had come from Jerusalem,
[2] they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands defiled,
that is, unwashed.
[3] (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they
wash their hands, observing the tradition of the elders;
[4]
and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they
purify themselves; and there are many other traditions which they
observe, the washing of cups and pots and vessels of bronze.)
[5]
And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not
live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with hands
defiled?"
[8] You leave the
commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men.
[9] And he said to them, You have a fine way of rejecting the
commandment of God, in order to keep your tradition!
[10] For Moses said,
`Honor your father and your mother';
and, `He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die';
[11]
but you say, `If a man tells his father or his mother, What you would
have gained from me is Corban' (that is, given to God) --
[12] then you no longer
permit him to do anything for his father or mother,
[13] thus making void the
word of God through your tradition which you hand on. And many such
things you do.
[6] And he said to them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you
hypocrites, as it is written, `This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is
far from me;
[7] in vain do they
worship me,
teaching as doctrines
the precepts of men.'

THE TEACHING ON
DIVORCE
[1] Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, he went away from
Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan;
[2] and large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.
[3] And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, "Is
it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?"
[4] He answered, Have you
not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and
female,
[5] and said, `For this reason a man
shall leave his father and mother
and
be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'?
[6] So they are no longer
two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man
put asunder.
[7] They said to him, "Why then did Moses command one to give a
certificate of divorce, and to put her away?"
[8] He said to them, For
your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but
from the beginning it was not so.
[9] And I say to you:
whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another,
commits adultery.
|
Mark.10
[1] And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond
the Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again; and again, as his custom
was, he taught them.
[2] And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, "Is it
lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"
[3] He answered them, What
did Moses command you?
[4] They said, "Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of
divorce, and to put her away."
[5] But Jesus said to them, For
your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.
[6] But from the beginning
of creation, `God made them male and female.'
[7] `For this reason a man
shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife,
[8] and the two shall
become one flesh.' So they are no longer two but one flesh.
[9] What therefore God has
joined together, let not man put asunder.
[10] And in the house the disciples asked him again about this
matter.
[11] And he said to them, Whoever
divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery against her;
[12] and if she divorces
her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.

THE RICH YOUNG MAN
[16] And behold, one came up to him, saying, "Teacher, what good
deed must I do, to have eternal life?"
[17] And he said to him, Why
do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. If you
would enter life, keep the commandments.
[18] He said to him, "Which?" And Jesus said, You shall not kill, You shall not
commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness,
[19] Honor your father and
mother, and,
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
[20] The young man said to him, "All these I have observed; what
do I still lack?"
[21] Jesus said to him, If
you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor,
and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.
[22] When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for
he had great possessions.
|
Mark.10
[17] And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and
knelt before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to
inherit eternal life?"
[18] And Jesus said to him, Why
do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.
[19] You know the
commandments: `Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do
not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.'
[20] And he said to him, "Teacher, all these I have observed
from my youth."
[21] And Jesus looking upon him loved him, and said to him, You lack one thing; go, sell what you
have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and
come, follow me.
[22] At that saying his countenance fell, and he went away
sorrowful; for he had great possessions.
|
Luke.18
[18] And a ruler asked him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to
inherit eternal life?"
[19] And Jesus said to him, Why
do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.
[20] You know the
commandments: `Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do
not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.'
[21] And he said, "All these I have observed from my youth."
[22] And when Jesus heard it, he said to him, One thing you still lack. Sell all that
you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in
heaven; and come, follow me.

WHAT SHALL WE HAVE?
[27] Then
Peter said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you.
What then shall we have?"
[28] Jesus said to them, Truly,
I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his
glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve
thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
[29] And every one who has
left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands,
for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal
life.
[30] But many that are
first will be last, and the last first.
|
Mark.10
[28] Peter began to say to him, "Lo, we have left everything and
followed you."
[29] Jesus said, Truly, I
say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters
or mother or father or
children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel,
[30] who will not receive
a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and
lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.
[31] But many that are
first will be last, and the last first.
|
[28] And
Peter said, "Lo, we have left our homes and followed you."
[29] And he said to them, Truly,
I say to you, there is no man who has left house or wife or brothers or
parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God,
[30] who will not receive
manifold more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life
