Luke 4
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and he
went to the synagogue, as his custom was, on the sabbath day. And he stood
up to read;
17 and there was given to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He
opened the book and found the place where it was written,
18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because
he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim
release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at
liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim
the acceptable year of the Lord." (Isaiah

20 And he closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and
sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.
21 And he began to say to them, "Today this
scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."
22 And all spoke well of him, and wondered at the gracious words
which proceeded out of his mouth; and they said, "Is not this Joseph's
son?"
Blessed are the Persecuted Ones
Matthew 5

Fulfilling the Law and the Prophets
Matthew 5
17 "Think not that I have come to abolish the
law
and the prophets;
I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them.
18 For truly,
I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot,
will pass from the law
until all is accomplished.
19 Whoever then
relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall
be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches
them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I tell
you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees,
you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
21 "You have heard that it was said to the
men of old, 'You shall not kill;

A Man's Foes
Matthew 10

you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour;

will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child, and children

and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But he who endures to

Matthew 13

4 and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless
they purify themselves; and there are many other traditions which they

not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with hands defiled?"
9 And he said to them, "You have a fine way
of rejecting the commandment of God,
in order to keep your tradition!
10 For Moses

and, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother,

prophesy
of you hypocrites, as it is written,

people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;
7 in vain do

The Coming of Elijah
Matthew 17
9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them,
"Tell no one the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead."

The Temple Tax
Matthew 17
24 When they came to Caper'na-um, the
collectors of the half-shekel tax went up to Peter and said, "Does not
your teacher pay the tax?" (Exodus
30:13)
25 He said, "Yes." And when he came
home, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, "What do
you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute?
From their sons or from others?"
26 And when he said, "From others,"
Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are free.

However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook, and
take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will
find a shekel; take that and give it to them for me and for yourself."
The Eye That Causes to Sin
Matthew 18
9 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck
it out and throw it away; it is better for you to enter life with one eye
than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire. |
Mark 9

On Reproving One's Brother
Matthew 18

every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses.

Luke 16

out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Laz'arus to dip the
end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this
flame.'
25 But Abraham
said, 'Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things,
and Laz'arus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here,
and you are in anguish.
26 And besides
all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that
those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross
from there to us.'
27 And he said,
'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house,
28 for I have
five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this
place of torment.'
29 But Abraham
said, 'They have Moses and the prophets;
let them hear them.'
30 And he said,
'No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will
repent.'
31 He said to
him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets,
neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'

Luke 24
13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emma'us,
about seven miles from Jerusalem,
14 and talking with each other about all these things that had happened.
15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself
drew near and went with them.
16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.
17 And he said to them, "What is this conversation
which you are holding with each other as you walk?" And they stood
still, looking sad.
18 Then one of them, named Cle'opas, answered him, "Are you the
only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened
there in these days?"
19 And he said to them, "What things?"
And they said to him, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet
mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned
to death, and crucified him.
21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and
besides all this, it is now the third day since this happened.
22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the
tomb early in the morning
23 and did not find his body; and they came back saying that they
had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.
24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it
just as the women had said; but him they did not see."
25 And he said to them, "O foolish men, and
slow of heart to believe all that the prophets
have spoken!
26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should
suffer these things and enter into his glory?"
27 And beginning with Moses and all the prophets,
he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

Luke 24
36 As they were saying this, Jesus himself stood among them.
37 But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they
saw a spirit.
38 And he said to them, "Why are you troubled,
and why do questionings rise in your hearts?
39 See my hands
and my feet, that it is I myself; handle me, and see; for a spirit has
not flesh and bones as you see that I have."

41 And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said
to them, "Have you anything here to eat?"
42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
43 and he took it and ate before them.
44 Then he said to them, "These are my words
which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written
about me in the law of Moses and the prophets
and the psalms must be fulfilled."
45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures,
46 and said to them, "Thus
it is written, that the Christ should suffer
and on the third day rise from the dead, (Hosea
6:2)
47 and that repentance
and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations,
beginning from Jerusalem.
48 You are witnesses
of these things.
49 And behold,
I send the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city, until you
are clothed with power from on high."

Up the Serpent
John 3
13 No one has
ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man.

lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted

If You Believed Moses
John 5
28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming

44 How can you

26 Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say
to you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your
fill of the loaves.
27 Do not labor
for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal
life, which the Son of man will give to you; for on him has God the Father
set his seal."
28 Then they said to him, "What must we do, to be doing the works
of God?"
29 Jesus answered them, "This is the work
of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent."
30 So they said to him, "Then what sign do you do, that we may see,
and believe you? What work do you perform?
31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written,
'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" (Exodus

32 Jesus then said to them, "Truly, truly,
I say to you, it was not Moses
who gave you the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread

34 They said to him, "Lord, give us this bread always."
35 Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of
life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall
never thirst."

None Of You Keeps the Law
John 7
14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and
taught.
15 The Jews marveled at it, saying, "How is it that this man has
learning, when he has never studied?"
16 So Jesus answered them, "My teaching is
not mine, but his who sent me;
17 if any man's
will is to do his will, he shall know whether the teaching is from God
or whether I am speaking on my own authority.
18 He who speaks
on his own authority seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of
him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.
19 Did not Moses
give you the law?
Yet none of you keeps the law.
Why do you seek to kill me?"
20 The people answered, "You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill
you?"
21 Jesus answered them, "I did one deed, and
you all marvel at it.
22 Moses
gave you circumcision (not that it is from
Moses,
but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man upon the sabbath. (Leviticus
12:3, Genesis 17:10, 21:4)
23 If on the
sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law
of Moses may not be broken, are you angry
with me because on the sabbath I made a man's whole body well?
24 Do not judge
by appearances, but judge with right judgment."
Living Water
John 7
37 On the last day of the feast, the great
day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, "If any
one thirst, let him come to me and drink. (Leviticus
23:36, Isaiah 55:1)
38 He who believes
in me, as the scripture
has said, 'Out of his heart shall flow rivers
of living water.'" (Zechariah 14:8)
39 Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in
him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because
Jesus was not yet glorified.

them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may

The Traitor
John 13
18 I am not speaking of you all; I know whom
I have chosen; it is that the scripture may
be fulfilled, 'He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.' (Psalm

John 17
12 While
I was with them, I kept them in thy name, which thou hast given me; I have
guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the

The Vinegar
John 19
28 After this Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to
fulfil the scripture), "I thirst."
29 A bowl full of vinegar stood there; so they
put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop and held it to his mouth. (Psalm

30 When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished";
