A Prayer
of Jesus
I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise
and understanding and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will

ON SERVING TWO MASTERS

Matt.6

[24] No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
M
Luke.16

[13] No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

THE CENTURION'S SLAVE

Matt.8

[5] As he entered Caper'na-um, a centurion came forward to him, beseeching him
[6] and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress."
[7] And he said to him, I will come and heal him.

[8] But the centurion answered him, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.

[9] For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, `Go,' and he goes, and to another, `Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, `Do this,' and he does it."
[10] When Jesus heard him, he marveled, and said to those who followed him, Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.
[11] I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven,
[12] while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth."
[13] And to the centurion Jesus said, Go; be it done for you as you have believed. And the servant was healed at that very moment.
M
Luke.7

[1] After he had ended all his sayings in the hearing of the people he entered Caper'na-um.
[2] Now a centurion had a slave who was dear to him, who was sick and at the point of death.
[3] When he heard of Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his slave.
[4] And when they came to Jesus, they besought him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy to have you do this for him,
[5] for he loves our nation, and he built us our synagogue."
[6] And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying to him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof;
[7] therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed.
[8] For I am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, `Go,' and he goes; and to another, `Come,' and he comes; and to my slave, `Do this,' and he does it."
[9] When Jesus heard this he marveled at him, and turned and said to the multitude that followed him, I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith."

[10] And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave well.

SLAVE AND MASTER

Matt.10

[17] Beware of men; for they will deliver you up to councils, and flog you in their synagogues,
[18] and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear testimony before them and the Gentiles.
[19] When they deliver you up, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour;
[20] for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
[21] Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death;
[22] and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.
[23] When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel, before the Son of man comes.
[24] A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master;
[25] it is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Be-el'zebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.

THE PARABLE OF THE WEEDS

Matt.13

[24] Another parable he put before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field;
[25] but while men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.
[26] So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.
[27] And the servants of the householder came and said to him, `Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then has it weeds?'
[28] He said to them, `An enemy has done this.' The servants said to him, `Then do you want us to go and gather them?'
[29] But he said, `No; lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them.
[30] Let both grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.

THE PARABLE OF THE UNMERCIFUL SLAVE

Matt.18

[23] Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.
[24] When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents;
[25] and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.
[26] So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, `Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.'
[27] And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.
[28] But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, `Pay what you owe.'
[29] So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, `Have patience with me, and I will pay you.'
[30] He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt.
[31] When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place.
[32] Then his lord summoned him and said to him, `You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me;
[33] and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?'
[34] And in anger his lord delivered him to the jailers, till he should pay all his debt.
[35] So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.

THE SONS OF ZEBEDEE
Matt.20

[20] Then the mother of the sons of Zeb'edee came up to him, with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something.
[21] And he said to her, What do you want? She said to him, "Command that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom."
[22] But Jesus answered, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?

They said to him, "We are able."
[23] He said to them, You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.

[24] And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers.
[25] But Jesus called them to him and said, You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.

[26] It shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant,
[27] and whoever would be first among you must be your slave;
[28] even as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Mark.10

[35] And James and John, the sons of Zeb'edee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you."
[36] And he said to them, What do you want me to do for you?
[37] And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory."
[38] But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?
[39] And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized;
[40] but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.
[41] And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John.
[42] And Jesus called them to him and said to them, You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.
[43] But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant,
[44] and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.
[45] For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

THE PARABLE OF THE WICKED TENANTS

Matt.21

[33] Hear another parable. There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country.
[34] When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit;
[35] and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.
[36] Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them.

[37] Afterward he sent his son to them, saying, `They will respect my son.'

[38] But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, `This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.'
[39] And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
[40] When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?
[41] They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons."
[42] Jesus said to them, Have you never read in the scriptures: `The very stone which the builders rejected
has become the head of the corner;
this was the Lord's doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes'?
[43] Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing the fruits of it.
[45] When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them.
[46] But when they tried to arrest him, they feared the multitudes, because they held him to be a prophet.
Mark.12

[1] And he began to speak to them in parables. A man planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a pit for the wine press, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country.
[2] When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.
[3] And they took him and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.
[4] Again he sent to them another servant, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully.

[5] And he sent another, and him they killed; and so with many others, some they beat and some they killed.
[6] He had still one other, a beloved son; finally he sent him to them, saying, `They will respect my son.'

[7] But those tenants said to one another, `This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'

[8] And they took him and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.
[9] What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants, and give the vineyard to others.

[10] Have you not read this scripture: `The very stone which the builders rejected
has become the head of the corner;
[11] this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"

[12] And they tried to arrest him, but feared the multitude, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them; so they left him and went away.
Luke.20

[9] And he began to tell the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country for a long while.
[10] When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, that they should give him some of the fruit of the vineyard; but the tenants beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.

[11] And he sent another servant; him also they beat and treated shamefully, and sent him away empty handed.
[12] And he sent yet a third; this one they wounded and cast out.

[13] Then the owner of the vineyard said, `What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will respect him.'
[14] But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, `This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.'
[15] And they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
[16] He will come and destroy those tenants, and give the vineyard to others." When they heard this, they said, "God forbid!"

[17] But he looked at them and said, What then is this that is written: `The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner'?
[18] Every one who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but when it falls on any one it will crush him."

[19] The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on him at that very hour, but they feared the people; for they perceived that he had told this parable against them.

THE PARABLE OF THE MARRIAGE FEAST

Matt.22

1] And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying,
[2] The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son,
[3] and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come.

[4] Again he sent other servants, saying, `Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.'
[5] But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business,
[6] while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.
[7] The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
[8] Then he said to his servants, `The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy.

[9] Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.'

[10] And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.
[11] "But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment;
[12] and he said to him, `Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless.
[13] Then the king said to the attendants, `Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.'
[14] For many are called, but few are chosen.
M

[16] But he said to him, A man once gave a great banquet, and invited many;

[17] and at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, `Come; for all is now ready.'
[18] But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, `I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it; I pray you, have me excused.'
[19] And another said, `I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them; I pray you, have me excused.'
[20] And another said, `I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.'

[21] So the servant came and reported this to his master. Then the householder in anger said to his servant, `Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and maimed and blind and lame.'
[22] And the servant said, `Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.'
[23] And the master said to the servant, `Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.
[24] For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.'

THE FAITHFUL AND WISE SLAVE

Matt.24

[45] Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time?
[46] Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing.
[47] Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.
[48] But if that wicked servant says to himself, `My master is delayed,'
[49] and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eats and drinks with the drunken,
[50] the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know,
[51] and will punish him, and put him with the hypocrites; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.
M
Luke.12

[42] And the Lord said, Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time?
[43] Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing.
[44] Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.
[45] But if that servant says to himself, `My master is delayed in coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk,
[46] the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will punish him, and put him with the unfaithful.
[47] And that servant who knew his master's will, but did not make ready or act according to his will, shall receive a severe beating.
[48] But he who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, shall receive a light beating. Every one to whom much is given, of him will much be required; and of him to whom men commit much they will demand the more.

THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS

Matt.25

[14] For it will be as when a man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property;
[15] to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.
[16] He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them; and he made five talents more.
[17] So also, he who had the two talents made two talents more.
[18] But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money.
[19] Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.

[20] And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, `Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.'
[21] His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.'
[22] And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, `Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.'
[23] His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.'
[24] He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, `Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow;
[25] so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.'

[26] But his master answered him, `You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed?

[27] Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest.
[28] So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents.

[29] For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
[30] And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth
M
Luke.19

[12] He said therefore, A nobleman went into a far country to receive a kingdom and then return.
[13] Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten pounds, and said to them, `Trade with these till I come.'
[14] But his citizens hated him and sent an embassy after him, saying, `We do not want this man to reign over us.'

15] When he returned, having received the kingdom, he commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by trading.
[16] The first came before him, saying, `Lord, your pound has made ten pounds more.'

[17] And he said to him, `Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.'
[18] And the second came, saying, `Lord, your pound has made five pounds.'

[19] And he said to him, `And you are to be over five cities.'

[20] Then another came, saying, `Lord, here is your pound, which I kept laid away in a napkin;

[21] for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man; you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.'
[22] He said to him, `I will condemn you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?
[23] Why then did you not put my money into the bank, and at my coming I should have collected it with interest?'

[24] And he said to those who stood by, `Take the pound from him, and give it to him who has the ten pounds.'
[25] (And they said to him, `Lord, he has ten pounds!')
[26] `I tell you, that to every one who has will more be given; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

[27] But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.'

THE SLAVE IN CHARGE

M
Mark.13

[33] Take heed, watch; for you do not know when the time will come.
[34] It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch.
[35] Watch therefore -- for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning --
[36] lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.
[37] And what I say to you I say to all: Watch
L

THE MARRIAGE FEAST

M
M
Luke.12

[35] Let your loins be girded and your lamps burning,
[36] and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the marriage feast, so that they may open to him at once when he comes and knocks.
[37] Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes; truly, I say to you, he will gird himself and have them sit at table, and he will come and serve them.
[38] If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those servants!
[39] But know this, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into.
[40] You also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an unexpected hour.
[41] Peter said, "Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?"

THE PRODIGAL SON

M
Luke.15

[11] And he said, There was a man who had two sons;
[12] and the younger of them said to his father, `Father, give me the share of property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them.
[13] Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living.
[14] And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want.
[15] So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine.
[16] And he would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything.
[17] But when he came to himself he said, `How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger!
[18] I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you;
[19] I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants."'
[20] And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.
[21] And the son said to him, `Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'
[22] But the father said to his servants, `Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet;
[23] and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry;
[24] for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry.
[25] Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing.
[26] And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant.
[27] And he said to him, `Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.'
[28] But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him,
[29] but he answered his father, `Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends.
[30] But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!'
[31] And he said to him, `Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.
[32] It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'

THE UNWORTHY SLAVES

M
M
Luke.17

[7] Will any one of you, who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from the field, `Come at once and sit down at table'?
[8] Will he not rather say to him, `Prepare supper for me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink'?
[9] Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded?
[10] So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, `We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'

THE FOURTH GOSPEL

FREEDOM FROM SLAVERY
John.8

[31] Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples,
[32] and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.
[33] They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham, and have never been in bondage to any one. How is it that you say, `You will be made free'?"
[34] Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, every one who commits sin is a slave to sin.
[35] The slave does not continue in the house for ever; the son continues for ever.
[36] So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

AFTER WASHING THEIR FEET

John.13

[12] When he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and resumed his place, he said to them, Do you know what I have done to you?
[13] You call me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am.
[14] If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.
[15] For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.
[16] Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.
[17] If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
[18] I am not speaking of you all; I know whom I have chosen; it is that the scripture may be fulfilled, `He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.'
[19] I tell you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he.
[20] Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives any one whom I send receives me; and he who receives me receives him who sent me.
FRIENDS

John.15

[12] This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
[13] Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
[14] You are my friends if you do what I command you.
[15] No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.
[16] You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
[17] This I command you, to love one another.
[18] If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
[19] If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
[20] Remember the word that I said to you, `A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also.
[21] But all this they will do to you on my account, because they do not know him who sent me.
