A Prayer
of Jesus
I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise
and understanding and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will
ON LORDS
Here are collected all utterances of Jesus that incorporate the New Testament Greek word, kurios (kurios) and its forms.

The definition, as given by Thayer1 is:

kurios  (kurios) -  he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has the power of deciding; master, lord; a title of honor, expressive of respect and reverence, by which servants salute their masters; given to God (replaces the sacred names in the Septuagint), and to the Messiah.

The corresponding English word is colored in purple where it occurs in the English text below.

THE TEMPTATIONS

Matt.4

[1] Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
[2] And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry.
[3] And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread."

[4] But he answered, It is written, `Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"
[5] Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple,
[6] and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, `He will give his angels charge of you,' and `On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'"
[7] Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, `You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'"
[8] Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them;
[9] and he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me."

[10] Then Jesus said to him, Begone, Satan! for it is written, `You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.'
[11] Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.
M
Luke.1

[1] And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit
[2] for forty days in the wilderness, tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days; and when they were ended, he was hungry.
[3] The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."
[4] And Jesus answered him, "It is written, `Man shall not live by bread alone.'"

[9] And he took him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here;
[10] for it is written, `He will give his angels charge of you, to guard you,'
[11] and `On their hands they will bear you up,lest you strike your foot against a stone.'"
[12] And Jesus answered him, "It is said, `You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'"
[5] And the devil took him up, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time,

[6] and said to him, "To you I will give all this authority and their glory; for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will.
[7] If you, then, will worship me, it shall all be yours."
[8] And Jesus answered him, "It is written, `You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.'"

13] And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.

 ON SERVING TWO MASTERS
Matt.6

[24] No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
M
Luke.16

[13] No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

THE WARNING

Matt.7

[21] Not every one who says to me, `Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
[22] On that day many will say to me, `Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?'
[23] And then will I declare to them, `I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.'
M
Luke.6

[46] Why do you call me `Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you?

THE LORD OF THE HARVEST
Matt.9

[35] And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity.
[36] When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
[37] Then he said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;
[38] pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
M
Luke.10

[1] After this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to come.

[2] And he said to them, The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

BEWARE OF MEN

Matt.10

[17] Beware of men; for they will deliver you up to councils, and flog you in their synagogues,
[18] and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear testimony before them and the Gentiles.
[19] When they deliver you up, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour;
[20] for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
[21] Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death;
[22] and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.
[23] When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel, before the Son of man comes.
[24] A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master;
[25] it is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Be-el'zebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.

JESUS' THANKSGIVING

Matt.11

[25] At that time Jesus declared, I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes;
[26] yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will.
[27] All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
M
Luke.10

[21] In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will.
[22] All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

LORD OF THE SABBATH

Matt.12

[1] At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the sabbath; his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat.
[2] But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, "Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath."
[3] He said to them, Have you not read what David did, when he was hungry, and those who were with him:
[4] how he entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests?

[5] Or have you not read in the law how on the sabbath the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are guiltless?
[6] I tell you, something greater than the temple is here.
[7] And if you had known what this means, `I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless.

[8] For the Son of man is lord of the sabbath.
Mark.2

[23] One sabbath he was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain.
[24] And the Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?"
[25] And he said to them, Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him:
[26] how he entered the house of God, when Abi'athar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?

[27] And he said to them, The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath;
[28] so the Son of man is lord even of the sabbath.
Luke.6

[1] On a sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands.
[2] But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath?"
[3] And Jesus answered, Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him:

[4] how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?

[5] And he said to them, The Son of man is lord of the sabbath.

THE PARABLE OF THE WEEDS

Matt.13

[24] Another parable he put before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field;
[25] but while men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.
[26] So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.
[27] And the servants of the householder came and said to him, `Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then has it weeds?'
[28] He said to them, `An enemy has done this.' The servants said to him, `Then do you want us to go and gather them?'
[29] But he said, `No; lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them.
[30] Let both grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.'

THE GERASENE DEMONIAC
M
Mark.5

[18] And as he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him.
[19] But he refused, and said to him, Go home to your friends, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.
[20] And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decap'olis how much Jesus had done for him; and all men marveled.
Luke.8

[38] The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him;

but he sent him away, saying,
[39] Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.

And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

THE PARABLE OF THE UNMERCIFUL SLAVE

Matt.18

[23] Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.
[24] When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents;
[25] and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.
[26] So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, `Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.'
[27] And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.
[28] But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, `Pay what you owe.'
[29] So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, `Have patience with me, and I will pay you.'
[30] He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt.
[31] When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place.
[32] Then his lord summoned him and said to him, `You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me;
[33] and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?'
[34] And in anger his lord delivered him to the jailers, till he should pay all his debt.
[35] So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.

THE PARABLE OF THE UNFRUITFUL FIG TREE

M
M
Luke.13

[1] There were some present at that very time who told him of the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
[2] And he answered them, Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered thus?
[3] I tell you, No; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.
[4] Or those eighteen upon whom the tower in Silo'am fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who dwelt in Jerusalem?
[5] I tell you, No; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.
[6] And he told this parable: A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.
[7] And he said to the vinedresser, `Lo, these three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down; why should it use up the ground?'
[8] And he answered him, `Let it alone, sir, this year also, till I dig about it and put on manure.
[9] And if it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.'

HEALING ON THE SABBATH

M
M
Luke.13

[10] Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
[11] And there was a woman who had had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself.
[12] And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, Woman, you are freed from your infirmity.
[13] And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God.
[14] But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, said to the people, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed, and not on the sabbath day."
[15] Then the Lord answered him, You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger, and lead it away to water it?
[16] And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?
[17] As he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.

THE CLOSED DOOR

M
M
Luke.13

[22] He went on his way through towns and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem.
[23] And some one said to him, "Lord, will those who are saved be few?" And he said to them,
[24] Strive to enter by the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.
[25] When once the householder has risen up and shut the door, you will begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, `Lord, open to us.' He will answer you, `I do not know where you come from.'
[26] Then you will begin to say, `We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.'
[27] But he will say, `I tell you, I do not know where you come from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity!'
[28] There you will weep and gnash your teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves thrust out.
[29] And men will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit at table in the kingdom of God.
[30] And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.

THE UNJUST STEWARD

M
M
Luke.16

[1] He also said to the disciples, There was a rich man who had a steward, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his goods.
[2] And he called him and said to him, `What is this that I hear about you? Turn in the account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.'
[3] And the steward said to himself, `What shall I do, since my master is taking the stewardship away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg.
[4] I have decided what to do, so that people may receive me into their houses when I am put out of the stewardship.'
[5] So, summoning his master's debtors one by one, he said to the first, `How much do you owe my master?'
[6] He said, `A hundred measures of oil.' And he said to him, `Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.'
[7] Then he said to another, `And how much do you owe?' He said, `A hundred measures of wheat.' He said to him, `Take your bill, and write eighty.'
[8] The master commended the dishonest steward for his shrewdness; for the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light.
[9] And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous mammon, so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal habitations.
[10] He who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and he who is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much.
[11] If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will entrust to you the true riches?
[12] And if you have not been faithful in that which is another's, who will give you that which is your own?
[13] No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

THE LABORERS IN THE VINEYARD

Matt.20

[1] For the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.
[2] After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
[3] And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place;
[4] and to them he said, `You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.' So they went.
[5] Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same.
[6] And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing; and he said to them, `Why do you stand here idle all day?'
[7] They said to him, `Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, `You go into the vineyard too.'
[8] And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, `Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.'
[9] And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius.
[10] Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius.
[11] And on receiving it they grumbled at the householder,
[12] saying, `These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.'
[13] But he replied to one of them, `Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius?
[14] Take what belongs to you, and go; I choose to give to this last as I give to you.
[15] Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?'
[16] So the last will be first, and the first last.

ENTERING JERUSALELM

Matt.21

[1] And when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Beth'phage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,

[2] saying to them, Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me.
[3] If any one says anything to you, you shall say, `The Lord has need of them,' and he will send them immediately.
Mark.11

[1] And when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Beth'phage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,

[2] and said to them, Go into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat; untie it and bring it.
[3] If any one says to you, `Why are you doing this?' say, `The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.
Luke.19

[28] And when he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
[29] When he drew near to Beth'phage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples,
[30] saying, Go into the village opposite, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat; untie it and bring it here.
[31] If any one asks you, `Why are you untying it?' you shall say this, `The Lord has need of it.'

THE PARABLE OF THE TWO SONS

Matt.21

[28] What do you think? A man had two sons; and he went to the first and said, `Son, go and work in the vineyard today.'
[29] And he answered, `I will not'; but afterward he repented and went.
[30] And he went to the second and said the same; and he answered, `I go, sir,' but did not go.
[31] Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.
[32] For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him; and even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him.

THE PARABLE OF THE WICKED TENANTS

Matt.21

[33] Hear another parable. There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country.
[34] When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit;
[35] and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.
[36] Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them.

[37] Afterward he sent his son to them, saying, `They will respect my son.'

[38] But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, `This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.'
[39] And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
[40] When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?"
[41] They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons."
[42] Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures: `The very stone which the builders rejected
has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?
[43] Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing the fruits of it.
[45] When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them.
[46] But when they tried to arrest him, they feared the multitudes, because they held him to be a prophet.
Mark.12

[1] And he began to speak to them in parables. A man planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a pit for the wine press, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country.
[2] When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.
[3] And they took him and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.

[4] Again he sent to them another servant, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully.

[5] And he sent another, and him they killed; and so with many others, some they beat and some they killed.
[6] He had still one other, a beloved son; finally he sent him to them, saying, `They will respect my son.'

[7] But those tenants said to one another, `This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'
[8] And they took him and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.

[9] What will the owner of the vineyard do?

He will come and destroy the tenants, and give the vineyard to others.

[10] Have you not read this scripture: `The very stone which the builders rejected
has become the head of the corner;
[11] this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?

[12] And they tried to arrest him, but feared the multitude, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them; so they left him and went away.
Luke.20

[9] And he began to tell the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country for a long while.

[10] When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, that they should give him some of the fruit of the vineyard; but the tenants beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.

[11] And he sent another servant; him also they beat and treated shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.
[12] And he sent yet a third; this one they wounded and cast out.

[13] Then the owner of the vineyard said, `What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will respect him.'
[14] But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, `This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.'
[15] And they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

[16] He will come and destroy those tenants, and give the vineyard to others." When they heard this, they said, "God forbid!"

[17] But he looked at them and said, What then is this that is written: `The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner'?

[18] Every one who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but when it falls on any one it will crush him.
[19] The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on him at that very hour, but they feared the people; for they perceived that he had told this parable against them.

THE PARABLE OF THE GREAT BANQUET

Matt.22

[1] And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying,
[2] The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son,
[3] and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come.
[4] Again he sent other servants, saying, `Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.'
[5] But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business,
[6] while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.
[7] The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
[8] Then he said to his servants, `The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy.
[9] Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.'
[10] And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.
M
Luke.14

[15] When one of those who sat at table with him heard this, he said to him, "Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!"
[16] But he said to him, A man once gave a great banquet, and invited many;
[17] and at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, `Come; for all is now ready.'
[18] But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, `I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it; I pray you, have me excused.'
[19] And another said, `I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them; I pray you, have me excused.'
[20] And another said, `I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.'
[21] So the servant came and reported this to his master. Then the householder in anger said to his servant, `Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and maimed and blind and lame.'
[22] And the servant said, `Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.'
[23] And the master said to the servant, `Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.
[24] For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.'

THE GREAT COMMANDMENT

Matt.22

[34] But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sad'ducees, they came together.
[35] And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him.
[36] "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?"

[37] And he said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.
[38] This is the great and first commandment.
[39] And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
[40] On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.
Mark.12

[28] And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, "Which commandment is the first of all?"

29
] Jesus answered, The first is, `Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one;
[30] and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.'
[31] The second is this, `You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these.
Luke.10

[25] And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

[26] He said to him, What is written in the law? How do you read?
[27] And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself."

[28] And he said to him, You have answered right; do this, and you will live.

THE QUESTION ABOUT THE RESURRECTION

Matt.22

[23] The same day Sad'ducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection; and they asked him a question,
[24] saying, "Teacher, Moses said, `If a man dies, having no children, his brother must marry the widow, and raise up children for his brother.'

[25] Now there were seven brothers among us; the first married, and died, and having no children left his wife to his brother.
[26] So too the second and third, down to the seventh.

[27] After them all, the woman died.
[28] In the resurrection, therefore, to which of the seven will she be wife? For they all had her."
[29] But Jesus answered them, You are wrong, because you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God.
[30] For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

[31] And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God,
[32] `I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?
 He is not God of the dead, but of the living.

[33] And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.
Mark.12

[18] And Sad'ducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection; and they asked him a question, saying,
[19] "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the wife, and raise up children for his brother.

[20] There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no children;

[21] and the second took her, and died, leaving no children; and the third likewise;
[22] and the seven left no children. Last of all the woman also died.
[23] In the resurrection whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife."

[24] Jesus said to them, Is not this why you are wrong, that you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God?
[25] For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

[26] And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, `I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?
[27He is not God of the dead, but of the living; you are quite wrong.
Luke.20

[27] There came to him some Sadducees, those who say that there is no resurrection,
[28] and they asked him a question, saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the wife and raise up children for his brother.
[29] Now there were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and died without children;

[30] and the second
[31] and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died.

[32] Afterward the woman also died.
[33] In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife."
[34] And Jesus said to them, The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage;
[35] but those who are accounted worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage,
[36] for they cannot die any more, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
[37] But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.

[38] Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living; for all live to him.
[39] And some of the scribes answered, "Teacher, you have spoken well."
[40] For they no longer dared to ask him any question.

ABOUT DAVID'S SONS

Matt.22

[41] Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,
[42] saying, What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he? They said to him, "The son of David."
[43] He said to them, How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,
[44] `The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand,
till I put thy enemies under thy feet'?
[45] If David thus calls him Lord, how is he his son?
[46] And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did any one dare to ask him any more questions.
Mark.12

[35] And as Jesus taught in the temple,

he said, How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?

[36] David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, declared,

`The Lord said to my Lord,

Sit at my right hand, till I put thy enemies under thy feet.'

[37] David himself calls him Lord; so how is he his son? And the great throng heard him gladly.
Luke.20

[41] But he said to them, How can they say that the Christ is David's son?

[42] For David himself says in the Book of Psalms,

`The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at my right hand,
[43] till I make thy enemies a stool for thy feet.'
[44] David thus calls him Lord; so how is he his son?"

THE LAMENT OVER JERUSALEM

Matt.23

[37] O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!
[38] Behold, your house is forsaken and desolate.
[39] For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, `Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'
M
Luke.13

[34] O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!
[35] Behold, your house is forsaken.

And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, `Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'

THE DESOLATING SACRILEGE

Matt.24

[15] So when you see the desolating sacrilege spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),
[16] then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains;
[17] let him who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house;
[18] and let him who is in the field not turn back to take his mantle.

[19] And alas for those who are with child and for those who give suck in those days!
[20] Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a sabbath.
[21] For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be.
[22] And if those days had not been shortened, no human being would be saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.
Mark.13

[14] But when you see the desolating sacrilege set up where it ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains;

[15] let him who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything away;
[16] and let him who is in the field not turn back to take his mantle.
[17] And alas for those who are with child and for those who give suck in those days!
[18] Pray that it may not happen in winter.
[19] For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will be.

[20] And if the Lord had not shortened the days, no human being would be saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days.
Luke.21

[20] But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near.
[21] Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it;
[22] for these are days of vengeance, to fulfil all that is written.

[23] Alas for those who are with child and for those who give suck in those days! For great distress shall be upon the earth and wrath upon this people;
[24] they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led captive among all nations; and Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

YOU DO NOT KNOW

M
Mark.13

[33] Take heed, watch; for you do not know when the time will come.
[34] It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch.
[35] Watch therefore -- for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning --
[36] lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.
[37] And what I say to you I say to all: Watch.
L

BE PREPARED

Matt.24

[42] Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.

[43] But know this, that if the householder had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched and would not have let his house be broken into.

[44] Therefore you also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

45] Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time?

[46] Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing.
[47] Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.
[48] But if that wicked servant says to himself, `My master is delayed,'
[49] and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eats and drinks with the drunken,
[50] the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know,

[51] and will punish him, and put him with the hypocrites; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.
M
Luke.12

[35] Let your loins be girded and your lamps burning,
[36] and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the marriage feast, so that they may open to him at once when he comes and knocks.
[37] Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes; truly, I say to you, he will gird himself and have them sit at table, and he will come and serve them.
[38] If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those servants!

[39] But know this, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into.

[40] You also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an unexpected hour.
[41] Peter said, "Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?"
[42] And the Lord said, Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time?
[43] Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing.
[44] Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.
[45] But if that servant says to himself, `My master is delayed in coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk,
[46] the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will punish him, and put him with the unfaithful.
[47] And that servant who knew his master's will, but did not make ready or act according to his will, shall receive a severe beating.

THE PARABLE OF THE TEN MAIDENS

Matt.25

[1] Then the kingdom of heaven shall be compared to ten maidens who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.
[2] Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.
[3] For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them;
[4] but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.
[5] As the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.
[6] But at midnight there was a cry, `Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.'
[7] Then all those maidens rose and trimmed their lamps.
[8] And the foolish said to the wise, `Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.'
[9] But the wise replied, `Perhaps there will not be enough for us and for you; go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.'
[10] And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast; and the door was shut.
[11] Afterward the other maidens came also, saying, `Lord, lord, open to us.'
[12] But he replied, `Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.'
[13] Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS

Matt.25

[14] For it will be as when a man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property;
[15] to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.

[16] He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them; and he made five talents more.
[17] So also, he who had the two talents made two talents more.
[18] But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money.
[19] Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.

[20] And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, `Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.'
[21] His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.'
[22] And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, `Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.'
[23] His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.'
[24] He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, `Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow;
[25] so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.'
[26] But his master answered him, `You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed?
[27] Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest.
[28] So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents.

[29] For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
[30] And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.'
M
Luke.19

[12] He said therefore, A nobleman went into a far country to receive a kingdom and then return.
[13] Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten pounds, and said to them, `Trade with these till I come.'
[14] But his citizens hated him and sent an embassy after him, saying, `We do not want this man to reign over us.'

[
15] When he returned, having received the kingdom, he commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by trading.
[16] The first came before him, saying, `Lord, your pound has made ten pounds more.'

[
17] And he said to him, `Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.'
[18] And the second came, saying, `Lord, your pound has made five pounds.'

[
19] And he said to him, `And you are to be over five cities.'

[
20] Then another came, saying, `Lord, here is your pound, which I kept laid away in a napkin;
[21] for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man; you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.'

[
22] He said to him, `I will condemn you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?
[23] Why then did you not put my money into the bank, and at my coming I should have collected it with interest?'
[24] And he said to those who stood by, `Take the pound from him, and give it to him who has the ten pounds.'
[25] (And they said to him, `Lord, he has ten pounds!')
[26] `I tell you, that to every one who has will more be given; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
[27] But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.'

THE LAST JUDGMENT

Matt.25

[31] When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.
[32] Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats,
[33] and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left.
[34] Then the King will say to those at his right hand, `Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;
[35] for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,
[36] I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.'
[37] Then the righteous will answer him, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink?
[38] And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee?
[39] And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?'
[40] And the King will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.'
[41] Then he will say to those at his left hand, `Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels;
[42] for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
[43] I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.'
[44] Then they also will answer, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?'
[45] Then he will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.'
[46] And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

FROM THE FOURTH GOSPEL

AFTER WASHING THE DISCIPLES FEET

John.13

[12] When he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and resumed his place, he said to them, Do you know what I have done to you?
[13] You call me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am.
[14] If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.
[15] For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.
[16] Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.
[17] If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
[18] I am not speaking of you all; I know whom I have chosen; it is that the scripture may be fulfilled, `He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.'
[19] I tell you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he.
[20] Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives any one whom I send receives me; and he who receives me receives him who sent me.

WHO IS GREATER?

John.15

[9] As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love.
[10] If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.
[11] These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
[12] This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
[13] Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
[14] You are my friends if you do what I command you.
[15] No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.
[16] You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
[17] This I command you, to love one another.
[18] If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
[19] If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
[20] Remember the word that I said to you, `A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also.
[21] But all this they will do to you on my account, because they do not know him who sent me.
[22] If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.
[23] He who hates me hates my Father also.
[24] If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.
[25] It is to fulfil the word that is written in their law, `They hated me without a cause.'
