A Prayer
of Jesus
I thankthee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will

FROM THE BEATITUDES

[3]
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
[
4] Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
[
6] Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

[
11] Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

[
12] Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Luke.6

[20] And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

[
21] Blessed are you that hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. "Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh.
[
22]Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, on account of the Son of man!
[
23] Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets.

BE YE PERFECT

Matt.5

[43] You have heard that it was said, `You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'
[
44] But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

[
45] so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
[
46] For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
[
47] And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

[
48] You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

M

Luke.6

[
27] But I say to you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
[
28] bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.

[
32]If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
[
33] And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
[
34] And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
[
35] But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish.
[
36]Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

  ON SERVING TWO MASTERS

Matt.6

[24] No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon

[
13] No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

THE FATE OF THE DISCIPLES

Matt.10

[17] Beware of men; for they will deliver you up to councils, and flog you in their synagogues,
[
18] and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear testimony before them and the Gentiles.
[
19] When they deliver you up, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour;
[
20] for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
[
21] Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death;
[
22] and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.
[
23] When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel, before the Son of man comes.
[
24] A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master;
[
25] it is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Be-el'zebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.

L
QUALIFYING FOR DISCIPLESHIP

Matt.10

[
37] He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
[
38] and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

Luke.14

[25] Now great multitudes accompanied him; and he turned and said to them,
[
26] If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
[
27] Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
[
28] For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?
[
29] Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him,
[
30] saying, `This man began to build, and was not able to finish.'
[
31] Or what king, going to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
[
32] And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy and asks terms of peace.
[
33] So therefore, whoever of you does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

YOU WILL BE HATED BY ALL

Matt.24

[9] Then they will deliver you up to tribulation, and put you to death; and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake.

[
10] And then many will fall away, and betray one another, and hate one another.
[
11] And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray.
[
12] And because wickedness is multiplied, most men's love will grow cold.
[
13] But he who endures to the end will be saved.
[
14] And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, as a testimony to all nations; and then the end will come
.
 Mark.13

[9] But take heed to yourselves; for they will deliver you up to councils; and you will be beaten in synagogues; and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear testimony before them.
[
10] And the gospel must first be preached to all nations.
[
11] And when they bring you to trial and deliver you up, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say; but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.
[
12] And brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death;
[
13] and you will be hated by all for my name's sake.

But he who endures to the end will be saved.

Luke.21

[12] But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake.
[
13] This will be a time for you to bear testimony.
[
14] Settle it therefore in your minds, not to meditate beforehand how to answer;
[
15] for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.
[
16] You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and kinsmen and friends, and some of you they will put to death;
[
17] you will be hated by all for my name's sake.
[
18] But not a hair of your head will perish.

[
19] By your endurance you will gain your lives.

THE PARABLE OF THE POUNDS

Matt.25

[
14] For it will be as when a man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property;
[
15] to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.
[
16] He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them; and he made five talents more.
[
17] So also, he who had the two talents made two talents more.
[
18] But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money.

[
19] Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.

[
20] And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, `Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.'
[
21] His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.'
[
22] And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, `Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.'
[
23] His master said to him, `Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.'
[
24] He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, `Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow;
[
25] so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.'
[
26] But his master answered him, `You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed?

[
27] Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest.
[
28] So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents.

[
29] For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
[
30] And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.'

Luke.19

[11] As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.
[
12] He said therefore, A nobleman went into a far country to receive a kingdom and then return.
[
13] Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten pounds, and said to them, `Trade with these till I come.'

[
14] But his citizens hated him and sent an embassy after him, saying, `We do not want this man to reign over us.'
[
15] When he returned, having received the kingdom, he commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by trading.
[
16] The first came before him, saying, `Lord, your pound has made ten pounds more.'

[
17] And he said to him, `Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.'
[
18] And the second came, saying, `Lord, your pound has made five pounds.'

[
19] And he said to him, `And you are to be over five cities.'

[
20] Then another came, saying, `Lord, here is your pound, which I kept laid away in a napkin;

[
21] for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man; you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.'
[
22] He said to him, `I will condemn you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?
[
23] Why then did you not put my money into the bank, and at my coming I should have collected it with interest?'

[
24] And he said to those who stood by, `Take the pound from him, and give it to him who has the ten pounds.'
[
25] (And they said to him, `Lord, he has ten pounds!')
[
26] `I tell you, that to every one who has will more be given; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

[
27] But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.

"HATE" IN THE FOURTH GOSPEL
John.3

[
18] He who believes in him is not condemned; he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
[
19] And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
[
20] For every one who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.
[
21] But he who does what is true comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God.

John.7

[1] After this Jesus went about in Galilee; he would not go about in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.
[
2] Now the Jews' feast of Tabernacles was at hand.
[
3] So his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples may see the works you are doing.
[
4] For no man works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world."
[
5] For even his brothers did not believe in him.
[
6] Jesus said to them, My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.
[
7] The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify of it that its works are evil.
[
8] Go to the feast yourselves; I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come."
[
9] So saying, he remained in Galilee.

John.12

[20] Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks.
[
21] So these came to Philip, who was from Beth-sa'ida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus."
[
22] Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew went with Philip and they told Jesus.
[
23] And Jesus answered them, The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified.
[
24] Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
[
25] He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
[
26] If any one serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honor him.

[
17] This I command you, to love one another.
[
18] If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
[
19] If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
[
20] Remember the word that I said to you, `A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also.
[
21] But all this they will do to you on my account, because they do not know him who sent me.
[
22] If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.
[
23] He who hates me hates my Father also.
[
24] If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.
[
25] It is to fulfil the word that is written in their law, `They hated me without a cause.'
[
26] But when the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me;
[
27] and you also are witnesses, because you have been with me from the beginning.

John.17

[11] And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to thee. Holy Father, keep them in thy name, which thou hast given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.
[
12] While I was with them, I kept them in thy name, which thou hast given me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled.
[
13] But now I am coming to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
[
14] I have given them thy word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
[
15] I do not pray that thou shouldst take them out of the world, but that thou shouldst keep them from the evil one.
[
16] They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
[
17] Sanctify them in the truth; thy word is truth.
[
18] As thou didst send me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.
[
19] And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be consecrated in truth.
