THE PENALTIES
Matt. 5
[21] You have heard that it was said to the
men of old, `You
shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.'
[22] But I say to you that
every one who is angry with his brother shall be
liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the
council, and whoever says, `You fool!' shall be liable to the hell of fire.

THE TEST
Matt.7
[15] Beware of false prophets, who come to
you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.
[16] You will know them by their fruits. Are
grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles?
[17] So, every sound tree bears good fruit,
but the bad tree bears evil fruit.
[18] A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit,
nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
[19] Every tree that does not bear good
fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
[20] Thus you will know them by their
fruits.

NOT PEACE BUT FIRE
Matt.10
[34] Do not think that I
have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but
a sword.
35] For I have
come to set
a man against his father, and a daughter against
her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
[36] and a man's foes will
be those of his own household.

Luke.12
[49] I came to cast fire upon the earth; and
would that it were already kindled!
[50] I have a baptism to
be baptized with; and how I am constrained until it is accomplished!
[51] Do you think that I
have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division;
[52] for henceforth in one
house there will be five divided, three against two and two against
three;
[53] they will be divided,
father against son and son against father, mother
against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother-in-law against
her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

THE PARABLE OF THE
WEEDS INTERPRETED
Matt.13
[36] Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his
disciples came to him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds
of the field."
[37] He answered, He who
sows the good seed is the Son of man;
[38] the field is the
world, and the good seed means the sons of the kingdom; the weeds are
the sons of the evil one,
[39] and the enemy who
sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the close of the age, and the
reapers are angels.
[40] Just as the weeds are
gathered and burned with fire,
so will it be at the close of the age.
[41] The Son of man will
send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of
sin and all evildoers,
[42] and throw them into
the furnace of fire;
there men will weep and gnash their teeth.
[43] Then the righteous
will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has
ears, let him hear.

THE PARABLE OF THE
NET
Matt. 13
[47] Again, the kingdom of heaven
is like a net which was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every
kind;
[48] when it was full, men drew
it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into vessels
but threw away
the bad.
[49] So it will be at the close
of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the
righteous,
[50] and throw them into the
furnace of fire; there
men will weep and gnash their teeth.

ON CAUSES OF SIN
Matt.18
[6] but whoever causes one of these little
ones who believe in
me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone
fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.
[7] Woe to the world for
temptations to sin! For it is necessary that
temptations come, but woe to the man by whom the temptation comes!
[8] And if your hand or
your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw
it away; it is better for you to enter life maimed or lame than with
two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire.
[9] And if your eye causes
you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it
is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be
thrown into the hell of fire.
|
Mark.9
[42] Whoever causes one of these little ones
who believe in me
to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung round
his neck and he were thrown into the sea.
[43] And if your
hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life
maimed than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire.
[45] And if your foot
causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to
enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell.
[47] And if your eye causes
you to sin, pluck it out; it is better for you
to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be
thrown into hell,
[48] where their worm does not
die, and the fire is
not quenched.
[49] For
every one will be salted with fire.
[50] Salt is good; but if
the salt has lost its saltness, how will you
season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.
|
Luke.17
[1] And he said to his
disciples, Temptations to sin are
sure to come; but woe to him by whom they come!
[2] It would be better for
him if a millstone were hung round his neck and
he were cast into the sea, than that he should cause one of these
little ones to sin.

THE DAY OF THE SON
OF MAN
Matt. 24
[26] So, if they say to you, `Lo, he is in
the wilderness,' do
not go out; if they say, `Lo, he is in the inner rooms,' do not believe
it.
[27] For as the lightning comes from the
east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of
man.
[28] Wherever the body is, there the eagles
will be gathered together.
[37] As were the days of Noah, so will be
the coming of the Son of man.
[38]
For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the
ark,
[39] and they did not know until the flood
came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of man.
Matt.10
[39] He who finds his life will lose it,
and he who loses his life for my sake will find it.
[40] Then two men will be in the field; one
is taken and one is left.
[41] Two women will be grinding at the mill;
one is taken and one is left.

Luke.17
[22] And he said to the disciples, The days are coming when you
will desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and you will not
see it.
[23] And they will say to
you, `Lo, there!' or `Lo, here!' Do not go, do not follow them.
[24] For as the lightning
flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the
Son of man be in his day.
[25] But first he must
suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
[26] As it was in the days
of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of man.
[27] They ate, they drank,
they married, they were given in marriage, until
the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed
them all.
[28] Likewise as it was in
the days of Lot -- they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they
planted, they built,
[29] but on the day when
Lot went out from Sodom fire
and sulphur rained from heaven and destroyed them all --
[30] so will it be on the
day when the Son of man is revealed.
[31] On that day, let him
who is on the housetop, with his goods in the
house, not come down to take them away; and likewise let him who is in
the field not turn back.
[32] Remember Lot's wife.
[33] Whoever seeks to gain
his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it.
[34] I tell you, in that
night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other
left.
[35] There will be two
women grinding together; one will be taken and the other left.
[37] And they said to him, "Where, Lord?" He said to them, Where the body is, there the eagles
will be gathered together.

THE JUDGMENT
Matt.25
[31] When the Son of man
comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on
his glorious throne.
[32] Before him will be
gathered all the nations, and he will separate them
one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats,
[33] and he will place the
sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left.
[34] Then the King will
say
to those at his right hand, `Come, O blessed of
my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of
the world;
[35] for I was hungry and
you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger
and you welcomed me,
[36] I was naked and you
clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came
to me.'
[37] Then the righteous
will answer him, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or
thirsty and give thee drink?
[38] And when did we see
thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee?
[39] And when did we see
thee sick or in prison and visit thee?'
[40] And the King will
answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it to
one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.'
[41] Then he will say to
those at his left hand, `Depart from me, you
cursed, into the eternal fire
prepared for the devil and his angels;
[42] for I was hungry and
you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
[43] I was a stranger and
you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in
prison and you did not visit me.'
[44] Then they also will
answer, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry or
thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not
minister to thee?'
[45] Then he will answer
them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of
these, you did it not to me.'
[46] And they will go away
into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

From the
Fourth Gospel
John.15
[1] I am the true vine, and my Father is
the vinedresser.
[2] Every branch of mine that
bears no fruit, he takes away, and every
branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
[3] You are already made clean by the word
which I have spoken to you.
[4] Abide in me, and I in you.
As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself,
unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.
[5] I am the vine, you are the
branches. He who abides in me, and I in him,
he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
[6]
If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and
withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned.
