ON DISCIPLESHIP
|
THE NATURE OF DISCIPLESHIP
|
Matthew 8:18-22
L
18 Now when Jesus
saw great crowds around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side.
19 And a scribe
came up and said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."
20 And Jesus
said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds
of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head."
21Another of
the disciples said to him, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father."
L
22 But Jesus
said to him, "Follow me, and leave the dead
to bury their own dead." |
Luke 9:57-60
L
57 As they were going along the road,
a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."

58 And Jesus said to him, "Foxes
have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere
to lay his head."
59 To another he said, "Follow
me." But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father."
60 But he said to him, "Leave
the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom
of God." |

THE FATE OF THE DISCIPLES
|
Matthew 10:17-25
17
Beware of men; for they will deliver you up to councils, and flog you in
their synagogues,
18
and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear
testimony before them and the Gentiles.
19
When they deliver you up, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what
you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour;
20
for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through
you.
21
Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child, and
children will rise against parents and have them put to death;
22 and
you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But he who endures to the
end will be saved.
23
When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly, I say
to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel, before
the Son of man comes.
24
"A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master;
25
it is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like
his master. If they have called the master of the house Be-el'zebul, how
much more will they malign those of his household. |
CONDITIONS OF DISCIPLESHIP
|
Matthew 10:37-39
L
37
He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he
who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
38 and
he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
39
He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for my sake
will find it.
40 He
who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent
me. |
Luke 14:26-27
L
26
If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and
wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life,
he cannot be my disciple.
27
Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple. |
Matthew 16:24-27
L
L
24 Then Jesus
told his disciples, "If any man would come
after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
L
25
For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life
for my sake will find it.
L
26
For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world and forfeits
his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life?
27
For the Son of man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father,
and then he will repay every man for what he has done. |
Mark 8:34-38
L
34 And he called
to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them,
"If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross
and follow me.
35
For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life
for my sake and the gospel's will save it.
36
For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his
life?
37
For what can a man give in return for his life?
38
For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful
generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in
the glory of his Father with the holy angels." |
Luke
9:23-26
L
L
L
23 And he said
to all, "If any man would come after me, let
him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
24
For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life
for my sake, he will save it.
L
25
For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or
forfeits himself?
L
26 For
whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of man be
ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the
holy angels. |

THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP
LUKE 14:28-34
28
For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and
count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?
29
Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all
who see it begin to mock him,
30
saying, 'This man began to build, and was not able to finish.'
31
Or what king, going to encounter another king in war, will not sit down
first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him
who comes against him with twenty thousand?
32
And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy
and asks terms of peace.
33
So therefore, whoever of you does not renounce all that he has cannot be
my disciple.
34
Salt is good; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be
restored?
35
It is fit neither for the land nor for the dunghill; men throw it away.
He who has ears to hear, let him hear." |
