A Prayer
of Jesus
I thankthee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will
ON DISCIPLES
Here are collected all utterances of Jesus that incorporate the New Testament Greek word, mathếtếs (maqhth)s).

The definitions, as given by Thayer1 are:

maqhth)s - a learner, pupil, disciple

This is a word of the Evangelists.  Of 231 incidents in the gospels, only 13 are in utterances of the Lord.  These pages focus only on words uttered by Jesus, therefore we have only the 13 to report.

The corresponding English word is colored in purple where it occurs in the English text below.

LIKE HIS TEACHER

Matt.10

[17] Beware of men; for they will deliver you up to councils, and flog you in their synagogues,
[18] and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear testimony before them and the Gentiles.
[19] When they deliver you up, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour;
[20] for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
[21] Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death;
[22] and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.
[23] When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel, before the Son of man comes.
[24] A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master;
[25] it is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Be-el'zebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.
M
Luke.6

[40] A disciple is not above his teacher, but every one when he is fully taught will be like his teacher

THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP

Matt.10

[37] He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
[38] and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
M
Luke.14

[25] Now great multitudes accompanied him; and he turned and said to them,
[26] If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
[27] Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
[28] For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?
[29] Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him,
[30] saying, `This man began to build, and was not able to finish.'
[31] Or what king, going to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
[32] And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy and asks terms of peace.
[33] So therefore, whoever of you does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

A DISCIPLES REWARD

Matt.10

[40] He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me.
[41] He who receives a prophet because he is a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward, and he who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.
[42] And whoever gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.

  PREPARING THE PASSOVER

Matt.26

[17] Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying,

"Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the passover?"

[18] He said, Go into the city to a certain one, and say to him,

`The Teacher says, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at your house with my disciples.'

[19] And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the passover.

 Mark.14

[12] And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the passover lamb, his disciples said to him,

"Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the passover?"
[13] And he sent two of his disciples, and said to them, Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him,

[14] and wherever he enters, say to the householder, `The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I am to eat the passover with my disciples?'
[15] And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us."
[16] And the disciples set out and went to the city, and found it as he had told them; and they prepared the passover.
Luke.22

[7] Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
[8] So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare the passover for us, that we may eat it.
[9] They said to him, "Where will you have us prepare it?"

[10] He said to them, Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house which he enters,
[11] and tell the householder, `The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I am to eat the passover with my disciples?'

[12] And he will show you a large upper room furnished; there make ready.
[13] And they went, and found it as he had told them; and they prepared the passover.

THE TRUTH WILL MAKE YOU FREE

                                                                      John.8

[31] Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples,
[32] and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.
[33] They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham, and have never been in bondage to any one. How is it that you say, `You will be made free'?"
[34] Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, every one who commits sin is a slave to sin.
[35] The slave does not continue in the house for ever; the son continues for ever.
[36] So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

BY THIS ALL MEN KNOW

John.13

[31] When he had gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and in him God is glorified;
[32] if God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once.
[33] Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, `Where I am going you cannot come.'
[34] A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
[35] By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

THE PROOF OF THE DISCIPLES

[5] I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
[6] If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned.
[7] If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you.
[8] By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples.
[9] As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love.
[10] If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.
[11] These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
