ON DISCIPLES

that incorporate the New Testament Greek word, mathếtếs (maqhth)s).
The definitions, as given by Thayer1 are: maqhth)s - a learner, pupil, disciple
This is a word of the Evangelists. Of 231 incidents in the gospels, only 13 are in utterances of the Lord. These pages focus only on words uttered by Jesus, therefore we have only the 13 to report. The corresponding English word is colored in purple where it occurs in the English text below. Hendrickson Publishers, Inc. P. O. THE TRUTH WILL MAKE YOU FREE John.8 [31] Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, [32] and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. [33] They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham, and have never been in bondage to any one. How is it that you say, `You will be made free'?" [34] Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, every one who commits sin is a slave to sin. [35] The slave does not continue in the house for ever; the son continues for ever. [36] So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. BY THIS ALL MEN KNOW John.13 [31] When he had gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and in him God is glorified; [32] if God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. [33] Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, `Where I am going you cannot come.' [34] A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. [35] By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. THE
PROOF OF THE DISCIPLES
[5] I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. [6] If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned. [7] If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. [8] By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples. [9] As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love. [10] If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. [11] These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. |
