ON THE LAW AND THE
PROPHETS
Matt.5
[17] Think
not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come
not to abolish them but to fulfil them.
[18] For truly, I say to you, till heaven
and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law
until all is accomplished.
[19] Whoever then relaxes one of the least
of these commandments
and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but
he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom
of heaven.
[20] For I tell you, unless your
righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never
enter the kingdom of heaven.

WHAT DEFILES A MAN
Matt.15
[1] Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and
said,
[2] "Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the
elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat."
[3] He answered them, And
why do you transgress the commandment
of God for the sake of your tradition?
[4] For God commanded,
`Honor your father and your mother,' and, `He who speaks evil of father
or mother, let him surely die.'
[5] But you say, `If any
one tells his father or his mother, What you would have gained from me
is given to God, he need not honor his father.'
[6] So, for the sake of
your tradition, you have made void the word of God.
[7] You hypocrites! Well
did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
[8] `This people honors me
with their lips,
but their heart is far
from me;
[9] in vain do they worship
me,
teaching as doctrines
the precepts (entalma) of men.
|
Mark.7
[5] And the Pharisees and the scribes asked
him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the
elders, but eat with hands defiled?"
[8] You leave the commandment of God, and hold
fast the tradition of men."
[9] And
he said to them, You have a fine way
of rejecting the commandment
of God, in order to keep your tradition!
[10] For Moses said,
`Honor your father and your mother'; and, `He who speaks evil of father
or mother, let him surely die';
[11] but you say, `If a
man tells his father or his mother, What you would have gained from me
is Corban' (that is, given to God) --
[12] then you no longer
permit him to do anything for his father or mother,
[13] thus making void
the word of God through your tradition which you hand on. And many such
things you do.
[6] And
he said to them, Well did Isaiah
prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, `This people honors me
with their lips, but their heart is far from me;
[7] in vain do they
worship me,
teaching
as doctrines the precepts
(entalma) of
men.'

THE PRODIGAL SON

Luke.15
[11]
And he said, There was a man who
had two sons;
[12] and the younger of them said to his
father, `Father, give me the share of property that falls to me.' And
he divided his living between them.
[13] Not many days later, the younger son
gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there
he squandered his property in loose living.
[14] And when he had spent everything, a
great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want.
[15] So he went and joined himself to one of
the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed
swine.
[16] And he would gladly have fed on the
pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything.
[17] But when he came to himself he said,
`How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare,
but I perish here with hunger!
[18] I will arise and go to my father, and I
will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you;
[19] I am no longer worthy to be called
your son; treat me as one of your hired servants."'
[20] And he arose and came to his father.
But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had
compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.
[21] And the son said to him, `Father, I
have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be
called your son.'
[22] But the father said to his servants,
`Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his
hand, and shoes on his feet;
[23] and bring the fatted calf and kill it,
and let us eat and make merry;
[24] for this my son was dead, and is alive
again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry.
[25] Now his elder son was in the field;
and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing.
[26] And he called one of the servants and
asked what this meant.
[27] And he said to him, `Your brother has
come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has
received him safe and sound.'
[28] But he was angry and refused to go in.
His father came out and entreated him,
[29] but he answered his father, `Lo, these
many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave
me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends.
[30] But when this son of yours came, who
has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted
calf!'
[31] And he said to him, `Son, you are
always with me, and all that is mine is yours.
[32] It was fitting to make merry and be
glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is
found.'

THE RICH YOUNG MAN
Matt.19
[16] And behold, one came up to him, saying, "Teacher, what good
deed must I do, to have eternal life?"
[17] And he said to him, Why
do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. If you
would enter life, keep the commandments.
[18] He said to him, "Which?" And Jesus said, You shall not kill, You shall not
commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness,
[19] Honor your father and
mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
[20] The young man said to him, "All these I have observed; what
do I still lack?"
[21] Jesus said to him, If
you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor,
and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.
[22] When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for
he had great possessions.
[23] And Jesus said to his disciples, Truly, I say to you, it will be hard
for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
|
Mark.10
[17] And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and
knelt before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to
inherit eternal life?"
[18] And Jesus said to him, Why
do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.
[19] You know the commandments:
`Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false
witness,
Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.
[20] And he said to him, "Teacher, all these I have observed
from my youth."
[21] And Jesus looking upon him loved him, and said to him, You lack one thing; go, sell what you
have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and
come, follow me.
[22] At that saying his countenance fell, and he went away
sorrowful; for he had great possessions.
[23] And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it will be for those who have
riches to enter the kingdom of God!
|
Luke.18
[18] And a ruler asked him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to
inherit eternal life?"
[19] And Jesus said to him, Why
do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.
[20] You know the commandments: `
Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false
witness,
Honor your father and mother.'
[21] And he said, "All these I have observed from my youth."
[22] And when Jesus heard it, he said to him, One thing you still lack. Sell all that
you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in
heaven; and come, follow me.
[23] But when he heard this he became sad, for he was very rich.
[24] Jesus looking at him said, How hard it is for those who have
riches to enter the kingdom of God!

THE GREAT COMMANDMENT
Matt.22
[34] But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the
Sad'ducees, they came together.
[35] And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test
him.
[36] "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?"
[37] And he said to him, You
shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your
soul, and with all your mind.
[38] This is the great and
first commandment.
[39] And a second is like
it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
[40] On these two commandments depend all the
law and the prophets.
|
Mark.12
[28] And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing
with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him,
"Which commandment is the first of all?"
[29] Jesus answered, The
first is, `Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one;
[30] and you shall love
the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with
all your mind, and with all your strength.'
[31] The second is this,
`You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than
these."
[32] And the scribe said to him, "You are right, Teacher; you
have truly said that he is one, and there is no other but he;
[33] and to love him with all the heart, and with all the
understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as
oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."
[34] And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him,
You are not far from
the kingdom of God. And after that no one dared to ask him any
question.
|
Luke.10
[25] And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test,
saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
[26] He said to him, What
is written in the law? How do you read?"
[27] And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all
your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and
with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself."
[28] And he said to him, You
have answered right; do this, and you will live.

FROM THE FOURTH GOSPEL
John.10
[ 14] I am the good
shepherd; I know my own and my own know me,
[ 15] as the Father knows
me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.
[ 16] And I have other
sheep, that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will
heed my voice. So there shall be one flock, one shepherd.
[ 17] For this reason the
Father loves me, because I lay down my life, that I may take it again.
[ 18] No one takes it from
me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down,
and I have power to take it again; this charge I have received from
my Father.
John.12
[ 46] I have come as light
into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.
[ 47] If any one hears my
sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come
to judge the world but to save the world.
[ 48] He who rejects me and
does not receive my sayings has a judge; the word that I have spoken
will be his judge on the last day.
[ 49] For I have not spoken
on my own authority; the Father who sent me has himself given me commandment what to say and
what to speak.
[ 50] And I know that his commandment is eternal life.
What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has bidden me.
John.13
[ 33] Little children, yet a
little while I am with you. You will seek me; and as I said to the Jews
so now I say to you, `Where I am going you cannot come.'
[ 34] A new commandment I give to you,
that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love
one another.
[ 35] By this all men will
know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
John.14
[ 15] If you love me, you
will keep my commandments.
[ 16] And I will pray the
Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you for
ever,
[ 17] even the Spirit of
truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor
knows him; you know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you.
[ 18] I will not leave you
desolate; I will come to you.
[ 19] Yet a little while,
and the world will see me no more, but you will see me; because I live,
you will live also.
[ 20] In that day you will
know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
[ 21] He who has my commandments and keeps them,
he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father,
and I will love him and manifest myself to him.
John.15
[1] I am the true vine,
and my Father is the vinedresser.
[2] Every branch of mine
that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear
fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
[3] You are already made
clean by the word which I have spoken to you.
[4] Abide in me, and I in
you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the
vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.
[5] I am the vine, you are
the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears
much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
[6] If a man does not abide
in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are
gathered, thrown into the fire and burned.
[7] If you abide in me,
and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done
for you.
[8] By this my Father is
glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples.
[9] As the Father has
loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love.
[10] If you keep my commandments, you will abide
in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his
love.
[11] These things I have
spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be
full.
[12] This is my commandment, that you love
one another as I have loved you.
[13] Greater love has no
man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
[14] You are my friends if
you do what I command you.
[15] No longer do I call
you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing;
but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father
I have made known to you.
[16] You did not choose
me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit
and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father
in my name, he may give it to you.
[17] This I command you, to love one another.
