A Prayer
of Jesus
I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will
ON BAPTISM AND BAPTISING
Here are collected all utterances of Jesus that incorporate the New Testament Greek words, baptist (baptisths), baptize (baptizw), and baptism (baptismos) and their forms.

The definitions, as given by Thayer1 are:

baptisths -       A baptizer, one who administers the rite of baptism, the surname of                              John, the forerunner of Christ
baptizw   -   1. To dip repeatedly, to immerge, submerge
                    2. In the New Testament, it is used particulary of the rite of sacred                                 ablution.

baptismos-   A washing, purification effected by means of water

The corresponding English word is colored in purple where it occurs in the English text below.

Note: I have omitted the Baptism Commissions in Matthew 28:19 and in the Longer Ending of Mark, Mark 16:9-20 for the following reasons:

1. The phrase in Matthew 28:19, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, is not an utterance of Jesus but was inserted by the churchmen in the early Fourth Century as indicated by the fact that quotations
of Matthew 28:29 from Eusebius prior to that time omit this phrase, but quotations after the Council of Nicaea (323 AD) include it.  It is excluded by all of the other evangelists.

2. There are no known surviving manuscripts from the period prior to the Council of Nicaea that include it.

3. The oldest surviving manuscripts include it, but date from the late Fourth Century, long after the Council of Nicaea.

4. The mention of baptism in Mark 16:16, the Markan rendition of the Great Commission, is part of the Longer Ending of Mark that most agree was added long after its original composition, and in any case contains material unique to the Longer Ending and inconsistent with the teaching of Jesus.

JESUS SPEAKS OF JOHN THE BAPTIST
Matt.11

[7] As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind?

[8] Why then did you go out? To see a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, those who wear soft raiment are in kings' houses.

[
9] Why then did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
[10] This is he of whom it is written, `Behold, I send my messenger before thy face,
who shall prepare thy way before thee.'
[11] Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
[12] From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and men of violence take it by force.
[13] For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John;
[14] and if you are willing to accept it, he is Eli'jah who is to come.
[15] He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
[16] But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places and calling to their playmates,
[17] `We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.'

[
18] For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, `He has a demon';

[
19] the Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, `Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds."
M
Luke.7

[24] When the messengers of John had gone, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind?
[25] What then did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings' courts.
[26] What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
[27] This is he of whom it is written, `Behold, I send my messenger before thy face,
who shall prepare thy way before thee.'
[28] I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

[
31] To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like?
[32] They are like children sitting in the market place and calling to one another, `We piped to you, and you did not dance;
we wailed, and you did not weep.'
[33] For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine; and you say, `He has a demon.'
[34] The Son of man has come eating and drinking; and you say, `Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'
[35] Yet wisdom is justified by all her children."

THE MOTHER OF THE SONS OF ZEBEDEE

[20] Then the mother of the sons of Zeb'edee came up to him, with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something.
[21] And he said to her, What do you want? She said to him, "Command that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom."

[22] But Jesus answered, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?

They said to him, "We are able."
[23] He said to them, You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.

[35] And James and John, the sons of Zeb'edee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you."
[36] And he said to them, What do you want me to do for you?
[37] And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory."
[38] But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?
[39] And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized;
[40] but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.

THE BAPTISM OF JESUS

Luke.12

[49] I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled!
[50] I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how I am constrained until it is accomplished!
[51] Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division;
[52] for henceforth in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three;
[53] they will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

BY WHOSE AUTHORITY?

[23] And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said,

"By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?"

[24] Jesus answered them, I also will ask you a question; and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things.
[25] The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven or from men?
And they argued with one another, "If we say, `From heaven,' he will say to us, `Why then did you not believe him?'
[26] But if we say, `From men,' we are afraid of the multitude; for all hold that John was a prophet."
[27] So they answered Jesus, "We do not know."
And he said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
Mark.11

[27] And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him,

[28] and they said to him, "By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?"
[29] Jesus said to them, I will ask you a question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

[30] Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men? Answer me.
[31] And they argued with one another, "If we say, `From heaven,' he will say, `Why then did you not believe him?'
[32] But shall we say, `From men'?" -- they were afraid of the people, for all held that John was a real prophet.
[33] So they answered Jesus, "We do not know."
And Jesus said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
Luke.20

[1] One day, as he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up
[2] and said to him, "Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority."
[3] He answered them, I also will ask you a question; now tell me,

[4] Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?

[5] And they discussed it with one another, saying, "If we say, `From heaven,' he will say, `Why did you not believe him?'
[6] But if we say, `From men,' all the people will stone us; for they are convinced that John was a prophet."
[7] So they answered that they did not know whence it was.
[8] And Jesus said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Luke.24

[36] As they were saying this, Jesus himself stood among them.
[37] But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit.
[38] And he said to them, Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts?
[39] See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself; handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have.
[41] And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said to them, Have you anything here to eat?
[42] They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
[43] and he took it and ate before them.
[44] Then he said to them, These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled.
[45] Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures,
[46] and said to them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,
[47] and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
[48] You are witnesses of these things.

Acts.1

[4] And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, you heard from me,
[5] for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
[6] So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?"
[7] He said to them, It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority.
[8] But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Sama'ria and to the end of the earth.
[9] And when he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.

Jesus makes no mention of baptism in the Fourth Gospel!
