HOUSEHOLD DIVISIONS
Matthew 10:34-39
L
34 "Do not think
that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace,
but a sword.
35
For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against
her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
36
and a man's foes will be those of his own household.

37
He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he
who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
38
and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
39
He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for my sake
will find it. |
Luke 12:51-53
L
51 Do you think
that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division;
52
for henceforth in one house there will be five divided, three against two
and two against three;
53
they will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother
against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother-in-law against
her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against his mother-in-law."
L
Luke 14:26-27
L
26 "If
any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife
and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot
be my disciple.
27
Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple. |

THE TRUE RELATIVES OF JESUS
Matthew 12:46-50
L
46While he was
still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood
outside, asking to speak to him.
L
L
L
L
48 But he replied
to the man who told him, "Who is my mother,
and who are my brothers?"
49And stretching
out his hand toward his disciples, he said, "Here
are my mother and my brothers!
50
For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister,
and mother." |
Mark 3:31-35
L
31And his mother
and his brothers came; and standing outside they sent to him and called
him.
32 And a crowd
was sitting about him; and they said to him, "Your mother and your brothers
are outside, asking for you."
33 And he replied,
"Who
are my mother and my brothers?"
34 And looking
around on those who sat about him, he said,
"Here are my mother and my brothers!
35
Whoever does the will of God is my brother, and sister, and mother." |
Luke 8:19-21
L
19 Then his mother and his brothers
came to him, but they could not reach him for the crowd.
20 And he was told, "Your mother and
your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you."

21 But he said to them, "My
mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it." |

THE SON OF DAVID
Matthew 22:41-46
L
41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered
together, Jesus asked them a question,
42 saying, "What
do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him,
"The son of David."
43 He said to them, "How
is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,
L
44
'The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I put thy enemies
under thy feet'?
45
If David thus calls him Lord, how is he his son?"
46 And no one was able to answer him
a word, nor from that day did any one dare to ask him any more questions. |
Mark 12:35-37
L
35 And as Jesus taught in the temple,
he said,
L
L
L
L
L
L
"How can the
scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?
36
David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, declared, 'The Lord said to
my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I put thy enemies under thy feet.'
L
37
David himself calls him Lord; so how is he his son?" And the great
throng heard him gladly. |
Luke 20:41-44
L
41 But he said to them, L
L
L
L
L
L
L
L
"How can they
say that the Christ is David's son?
L
42
For David himself says in the Book of Psalms, 'The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at my right hand,
43
till I make thy enemies a stool for thy feet.'
44
David thus calls him Lord; so how is he his son?" |

CALL NO MAN FATHER
Matthew 23:8,9
L
8 But you are
not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brethren.
9
And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in
heaven. |
FATHERHOOD DEFINED
John 8:33-59
L
33 They answered him, "We are descendants
of Abraham, and have never been in bondage to any one. How is it that you
say, 'You will be made free'?"
34 Jesus answered them, "Truly,
truly, I say to you, every one who commits sin is a slave to sin.
35
The slave does not continue in the house for ever; the son continues for
ever.
36
So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
37
I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me, because
my word finds no place in you.
38
I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard
from your father."
39 They answered him, "Abraham is our
father." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's
children, you would do what Abraham did,
40
but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard
from God; this is not what Abraham did.
41
You do what your father did." They said to him, "We were not born
of fornication; we have one Father, even God."
42 Jesus said to them, "If
God were your Father, you would love me, for I proceeded and came forth
from God; I came not of my own accord, but he sent me.
43
Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to
hear my word.
44
You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's
desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with
the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according
to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
45
But, because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.
46
Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe
me?
47
He who is of God hears the words of God; the reason why you do not hear
them is that you are not of God."
48 The Jews answered him, "Are we not
right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?"
49 Jesus answered, "I
have not a demon; but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.
50
Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it and he will be
the judge.
51
Truly, truly, I say to you, if any one keeps my word, he will never see
death."
52 The Jews said to him, "Now we know
that you have a demon. Abraham died, as did the prophets; and you say,
'If any one keeps my word, he will never taste death.'
53 Are you greater than our father
Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you claim to be?"
54 Jesus answered, "If
I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who glorifies me,
of whom you say that he is your God.
55
But you have not known him; I know him. If I said, I do not know him, I
should be a liar like you; but I do know him and I keep his word.
56
Your father Abraham rejoiced that he was to see my day; he saw it and was
glad."
57 The Jews then said to him, "You
are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?"
58 Jesus said to them, "Truly,
truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am."
59 So they took up stones to throw
at him; but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple. |
