BLESSED
ARE THE UNOFFENDED
[2]
Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent
word by his disciples
[3] and said to him, "Are you he who is to come, or shall
we look for another?"
[4] And Jesus answered them, Go and tell
John what you hear and see:
[5] the blind receive their sight
and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead
are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.
[6] And blessed (makarios) is he who takes
no offense at me.

[18] The disciples of John told him of all these things.
[19] And John, calling to him two of his disciples, sent
them to the Lord, saying, "Are you he who is to come, or shall we
look for another?"
[20] And when the men had come to him, they said, "John
the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, `Are you he who is to come,
or shall we look for another?'"
[21] In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues
and evil spirits, and on many that were blind he bestowed sight.
[22] And he answered them, Go and
tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight,
the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are
raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.
[23] And blessed (makarios)
is he who takes no offense at me."

BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO SEE
[16] But blessed (makarioi) are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.
[17] Truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous men
longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you
hear, and did not hear it.

[23] Then turning to the disciples he said
privately, Blessed (makarioi) are the eyes which
see what you see!
[24] For I tell you
that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not
see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

BLESSED
ARE YOU!
[13] Now when Jesus came into the district of
Caesare'a Philip'pi, he asked his disciples, Who do
men say that the Son of man is?
[14] And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Eli'jah,
and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
[15] He said to them, But who do you say that
I am?
[16] Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living
God."
[17] And Jesus answered him, Blessed (makarios) are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh
and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
[18] And I tell you, you are Peter, and on
this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail
against it.
[19] I will give you the keys of the kingdom
of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and
whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

[18] Now it happened that as he was praying
alone the disciples were with him; and he asked them, Who do the people say that I am?
[19] And they answered, "John the Baptist; but others say, Eli'jah;
and others, that one of the old prophets has risen."
[20] And he said to them, But who do you say
that I am?
And Peter answered, "The Christ of God."

THE BLESSEDNESS OF MARY
M
|
[27] As he said this, a woman in the crowd raised
her voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts
that you sucked!"
[28] But he said, Blessed (makarioi) rather are those who
hear the word of God and keep it!

BLESSED
ARE THE PREPARED
[43] But know this, that if the householder had
known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched
and would not have let his house be broken into.
[44] Therefore you also must
be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
[45] Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master
has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time?
[46] Blessed (makarios) is
that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing.
[47] Truly, I say to you,
he will set him over all his possessions.
[48] But if that wicked servant
says to himself, `My master is delayed,'
[49] and begins to beat his
fellow servants, and eats and drinks with the drunken,
[50] the master of that servant
will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does
not know,
[51] and will punish him, and put him with the hypocrites; there
men will weep and gnash their teeth.
|
M
|
[35] Let your loins be girded and your lamps burning,
[36] and be like men who are
waiting for their master to come home from the marriage feast, so that they
may open to him at once when he comes and knocks.
[37] Blessed (makarioi) are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes;
truly, I say to you, he will gird himself and have them sit at table,
and he will come and serve them.
[38] If he comes in the second
watch, or in the third, and finds them so, blessed (makarioi) are those servants!
[39] But know this, that if
the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would
not have left his house to be broken into.
[40] You also must be ready; for the Son of man
is coming at an unexpected hour."
[41] Peter said, "Lord, are
you telling this parable for us or for all?"
[42] And the Lord said, "Who
then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his master will set over his
household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time?
[43] Blessed (makarioi) is that servant whom his master when he comes will find
so doing.
[44] Truly, I say to you,
he will set him over all his possessions.
[45] But if that servant says
to himself, `My master is delayed in coming,'
and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat
and drink and get drunk,
[46] the master of that servant
will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does
not know, and will punish him, and put him with the unfaithful.
[47] And that servant who
knew his master's will, but did not make ready or act according to his
will, shall receive a severe beating.

BLESSED ARE THE LOWLY
M

[7] Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he marked how
they chose the places of honor, saying to them,
[8] When you are invited by any one to a marriage
feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest a more eminent man than
you be invited by him;
[9] and he who invited you both
will come and say to you, `Give place to this man,' and then you will begin
with shame to take the lowest place.
[10] But when you are invited,
go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to
you, `Friend, go up higher'; then you will be honored in the presence of
all who sit at table with you.
[11] For every one who exalts himself
will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
[12] He said also to the man who had invited him, When
you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers
or your kinsmen or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return, and
you be repaid.
[13] But when you give a feast,
invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind,
[14] and you will be blessed (makarios), because they cannot repay you.
You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.
[15] When one of those who sat at table with him heard this, he said to
him, Blessed (makarios) is he who shall eat bread
in the kingdom of God!

BLESSED ARE THE BARREN
M

M

[27] And there followed him a great multitude of the people, and of women
who bewailed and lamented him.
[28] But Jesus turning to them said, Daughters of
Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.
[29] For behold, the days are coming when they will
say, `Blessed (makariai) are the barren,
and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never gave suck!'
[30] Then they will begin to say to the mountains,
`Fall on us'; and to the hills, `Cover us.'
[31] For if they do this when the wood is green, what
will happen when it is dry?

BLESSEDNESS IN THE FOURTH GOSPEL
BLESSED ARE THE DOERS
[12] When he had washed their feet, and taken his
garments, and resumed his place, he said to them, Do
you know what I have done to you?
[13] You call me Teacher and Lord; and
you are right, for so I am.
[14] If I then, your Lord and Teacher,
have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.
[15] For I have given you an example,
that you also should do as I have done to you.
[16] Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant
is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who
sent him.
[17] If you know these things, blessed
(makarioi) are you if you do them.
[18] I am not speaking of you all; I
know whom I have chosen; it is that the scripture may be fulfilled, `He who
ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.'
[26] Eight days later, his disciples were again in
the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and
stood among them, and said, Peace be with you.
[27] Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here,
and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be
faithless, but believing.
[28] Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"
[29] Jesus said to him, Have you believed because
you have seen me? Blessed (makarioi) are
those who have not seen and yet believe.
