Prayer

I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise

Why I am not a Christian?

 by Tommy Reyes

The word “Christians” was first used by the unbelievers to identify the church goers in Antioch who listened to Paul and Barnabas teach for one year. The disciples were first called "Christians" in Antioch and whose disciples they were, we were not told. It was a new name tag. If this is all you need to be called a Christian, then I am not one of them. I don't fit to that description. I don’t go to church to worship, pray and much less hear for a year from Pauls of the new era. Besides, there are thousands of christian churches who are claiming to be the only true church. I have no time to try all of them.

The name "Christian" has been prostituted for so long that it has lost its true meaning. Many use the name in vain, only to gain confidence and trust for gainful reasons. There are many shades and variations in christian names. Born again christian, right wing christian, left wing christian, liberal christian, conservative christian, christian Catholic and Protestant christian to name the few. Remarkably, there are also christian cult and christian atheist.

King Agrippa testified to Paul that He was almost persuaded to become a Christian.

Why? Could there be then conflicting testimonies in the lives of the Christians? Was he fully convinced that Christians were not totally following the teachings of Christ but Paul's doctrine and others. I am  not fully persuaded too that Christians are truly the followers of the teachings of Christ. Will the real christian stand up, please?

Lastly, Peter encouraged the church devotees to suffer as a Christian and not to be ashamed of it. The judgment has come to begin at the house of God, the Christian church. I am sorry to be identified as a Christian. I am embarrassed by that empty name. However, I am glad to be part of the family of God. I am ready to suffer at whatever cost to follow my Master Jesus Christ but not to suffer as a Christian. I am determined to follow the gospel of God to the end.

REFERENCE:

Acts 11:25-26

25        Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul.

26        And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.

Acts 26:28

28        Then Agrippa said to Paul, "You almost persuade me to become a Christian.

1 Pet 4:16-17

16        Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.

17        For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?
