1. The Last Prediction of the Crucifixion
Matthew 26:1-5
l
1 When Jesus
had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples,
l
2 "You know that after two days the Passover
is coming, and the Son of man will be delivered up to be crucified.
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of
the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, who was called Ca'iaphas,
4 and took counsel together in order to arrest
Jesus by stealth and kill him.
5 But they said, "Not during the feast, lest
there be a tumult among the people." |
Mark 14:1-2
l
1 It was now two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened
Bread.
l
l
l
l
l
And the chief priests and the scribes
l
l
l
l
were seeking how to arrest him by stealth, and kill him;
2 for they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be a tumult of
the people." |
Luke 22:1-2
l
1 Now the feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the
Passover.
l
l
l
l
l
2 And the chief priests and the scribes
l
l
l
l
were seeking how to put him to death;
l
for they feared the people. |
2. The Anointing at Bethany
Matthew 26:6-13
l
6 Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,
7 a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive
ointment, and she poured it on his head, as he sat at table.
8 But when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, "Why
this waste?
l
9 For this ointment might have been sold for a large sum, and given
to the poor."
l
l
10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why
do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me.
11 For you always
have the poor with
l
you, but you will not always have me.
12 In pouring
this ointment on my body she has done it to prepare me for burial.
l
13 Truly, I say
to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what she has
done will be told in memory of her." |
Mark 14:3-9
3 And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as
he sat at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure
nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.
4 But there were some who said to themselves indignantly, "Why was
the ointment thus wasted?
5 For this ointment might have been sold for more than three hundred
denarii, and given to the poor." And they reproached her.
6 But Jesus said, "Let her alone; why do you
trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
7 For you always have the poor with you, and
whenever you will, you can do good to them; but you will not always have
me.
8 She has done what she could; she has anointed
my body beforehand for burying.
9 And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel
is preached in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory
of her." |
3. Instructions for Preparing the Passover
Matthew 26:17-19
l
17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to
Jesus, saying,
l
l
l
l
"Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the passover?"
l
l
18 He said, "Go into the city to a certain
one, and
l
l
l
say to him, 'The Teacher says, My time is
at hand; I will keep the passover at your house with my disciples.'"
l
l
l
l
l
l
19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared
the passover. |
Mark 14:12-16
l
12 And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed
the passover lamb, his disciples said to him,
l
l
l
"Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the passover?"
13 And he sent two of his disciples, and said to them, "Go
into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow
him,
14 and wherever
he enters,
say to the householder, 'The Teacher says,
Where is my guest room, where I am to eat the passover with my disciples?'
l
15 And he will
show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us."
16 And the disciples set out and went to the city, and found it
as he had told them; and they prepared the passover. |
Luke 22:7-13
7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the passover lamb
had to be sacrificed.
8 So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go
and prepare the passover for us, that we may eat it."
9 They said to him, "Where will you have us prepare it?"
l
10 He said to them, "Behold, when you have
entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him
into the house which he enters,
11 and tell the householder, 'The Teacher
says to you, Where is the guest room, where I am to eat the passover with
my disciples?'
12 And he will show you a large upper room
furnished; there make ready."
13 And they went, and found it as he had told them; and they prepared
the passover |
4. Sayings During the Last Supper
Matthew 26:20-29
l
20 When it was evening, he sat at table with the twelve disciples;
21 and as they were eating,
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
he said, "Truly, I say to you, one of you
will betray me."
l
22 And they were very sorrowful, and began to say to him one after
another, "Is it I, Lord?"
23 He answered, "He who has dipped his hand
in the dish with me, will betray me.
24 The Son of
man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of
man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been
born."
25 Judas, who betrayed him, said, "Is it I, Master?" He said to
him, "You have said so."
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke
it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take,
eat; this is my body."
l
27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to
them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you;
l
28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which
is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
l
29 I tell you I shall not drink again of this
fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's
kingdom." |
Mark 14:17-25
l
17 And when it was evening he came with the twelve.
18 And as they were at table eating,
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
Jesus said, "Truly,
I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me."
19 They began to be sorrowful, and to say to him one after another,
"Is it I?"
20 He said to them, "It is one of the twelve,
one who is dipping bread into the dish with me.
21 For the Son
of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son
of man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not
been born."
l
l
l
l
22 And as they were eating, he took bread, and blessed, and broke
it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take; this is
my body."
l
l
23 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to
them, and they all drank of it.
l
24 And he said to them, "This is my blood
of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
l
25 Truly, I say
to you, I shall not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day
when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. |
Luke 22:14-23
l
14 And when the hour came, he sat at table, and the apostles with
him.
l
l
15 And he said to them, "I have earnestly
desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer;
16 for I tell you I shall not eat it until
it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God."
21 But behold the hand of him who betrays
me is with me on the table.
l
23 And they began to question one another,
which of them it was that would do this.
l
l
l
l
22 For the Son of man goes as it has been
determined; but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!"
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and
gave it to them, saying, "This is my body which is
given for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, "Take
this, and divide it among yourselves;
l
l
l
l
l
18 for I tell you that from now on I shall
not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." |
5. Words on the Way to Gethsemane
Matthew 26:30-35
l
30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of
Olives.
l
31 Then Jesus said to them, "You will all
fall away because of me this night; for it is written, 'I will strike the
shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'
32 But after
I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee."
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
33 Peter declared to him, "Though they all fall away because of
you, I will never fall away."
34 Jesus said to him, "Truly, I say to you,
this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times."
35 Peter said to him, "Even if I must die with you, I will not deny
you." And so said all the disciples. |
Mark 14:26-31
l
26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of
Olives.
l
27 And Jesus said to them, "You will all fall
away; for it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will
be scattered.'
l
l
28 But after
I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee."
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
29 Peter said to him, "Even though they all fall away, I will not."
l
30 And Jesus said to him, "Truly, I say to
you, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three
times."
31 But he said vehemently, "If I must die with you, I will not deny
you." And they all said the same. |
Luke 22:39, 31-34
l
39 And he came out, and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of
Olives; and the disciples followed him.
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
31 "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to
have you, that he might sift you like wheat,
32 but I have prayed for you that your faith
may not fail; and when you have turned again, strengthen your brethren."
33 And he said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison
and to death."
34 He said, "I tell you, Peter, the cock will
not crow this day, until you three times deny that you know me." |
6. The Words Spoken in Gethsemane
Matthew 26:36-46
l
36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsem'ane, and
he said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I go yonder
and pray."
l
37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zeb'edee, he began
to be sorrowful and troubled.
38 Then he said to them, "My soul is very
sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me."
39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, "My
Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me;
l
l
l
nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt."
l
40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he
said to Peter, "So, could you not watch with me one
hour?
41 Watch and
pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing,
but the flesh is weak."
42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, "My
Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, thy will be done."
43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were
heavy.
44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third
time, saying the same words.
45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are
you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand, and
the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
l
46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer
is at hand." |
Mark 14:32-42
l
32 And they went to a place which was called Gethsem'ane; and he
said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I pray."
l
l
33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be
greatly distressed and troubled.
34 And he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful,
even to death; remain here, and watch."
35 And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed
that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from
him.
36 And he said, "Abba, Father, all things
are possible to thee; remove this cup from me; yet not what I will, but
what thou wilt."
37 And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, "Simon,
are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?
38 Watch and
pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing,
but the flesh is weak."
39 And again he went away and prayed, saying
the same words.
l
l
40 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were
very heavy; and they did not know what to answer him.
l
l
41 And he came the third time, and said to them, "Are
you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come;
the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
42 Rise, let
us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand." |
Luke 22:40-46
40 And when he came to the place he said to them,
l
l
l
"Pray that you may not enter into temptation."
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down
and prayed,
42 "Father, if thou art willing, remove this
cup from me;
l
nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done."
43, 44
45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found
them sleeping for sorrow,
l
46 and he said to them, "Why do you sleep?
Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation." |
7. On Being Taken Captive
Matthew 26:47-56
l
47 While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and
with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and
the elders of the people.
l
48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I shall
kiss is the man; seize him."
l
49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, "Hail, Master!" And
he kissed him.
50 Jesus said to him, "Friend, why are you
here?" Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him.
l
l
l
l
l
51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his
hand and drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest, and cut
off his ear.
52 Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword
back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the
sword.
53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my
Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?
54 But how then should the scriptures be fulfilled,
that it must be so?"
55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, "Have
you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?
Day after day I sat in the temple teaching,
and you did not seize me.
56 But all this has taken place, that the
scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled."
Then all the disciples forsook him and fled. |
Mark 14:43-52
l
43 And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one
of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief
priests and the scribes and the elders.
44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I shall
kiss is the man; seize him and lead him away under guard."
45 And when he came, he went up to him at once, and said, "Master!"
And he kissed him.
46 And they laid hands on him and seized him.
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the
slave of the high priest and cut off his ear.
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
48 And Jesus said to them, "Have you come
out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?
49 Day after day I was with you in the temple
teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled."
l
l
50 And they all forsook him, and fled.
51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth
about his body; and they seized him,
52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked. |
Luke 22:47-53
l
47 While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man
called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them.
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
He drew near to Jesus to kiss him;
48 but Jesus said to him, "Judas, would you
betray the Son of man with a kiss?"
l
49 And when those who were about him saw what would follow, they
said, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?"
50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off
his right ear.
l
l
l
51 But Jesus said, "No more of this!"
And he touched his ear and healed him.
l
l
l
l
l
l
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple
and elders, who had come out against him, "Have you
come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?
53 When I was with you day after day in the
temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power
of darkness." |
8. The Hearing Before the Chief Priests and the
Council
Matthew 26:59-68
l
59 Now the chief priests and the whole council sought false testimony
against Jesus that they might put him to death,
60 but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward.
At last two came forward
l
l
61 and said, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple
of God, and to build it in three days.'"
l
l
l
l
62 And the high priest stood up and said, "Have you no answer to
make? What is it that these men testify against you?"
l
63 But Jesus was silent. And the high
priest said to him, "I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are
the Christ, the Son of God."
64 Jesus said to him, "You have said so. But
I tell you, hereafter you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand
of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."
l
l
l
l
l
65 Then the high priest tore his robes, and said, "He has uttered
blasphemy. Why do we still need witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy.
66 What is your judgment?" They answered, "He deserves death."
67 Then they spat in his face, and struck him; and some slapped
him,
68 saying, "Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you? |
Mark 14:55-65
l
55 Now the chief priests and the whole council sought testimony
against Jesus to put him to death; but they found none.
56 For many bore false witness against him, and their witness did
not agree.
57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying,
58 "We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple that is made with
hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.'"
59 Yet not even so did their testimony agree.
60 And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, "Have
you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?"
61 But he was silent and made no answer.
Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?"
l
62 And Jesus said, "I am; and you will see
the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds
of heaven."
l
l
l
l
l
l
63 And the high priest tore his garments, and said, "Why do we still
need witnesses?
64 You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?" And they
all condemned him as deserving death.
l
65 And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to
strike him, saying to him, "Prophesy!" And the guards received him with
blows. |
Luke 22:66-70, 63-65
l
66 When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered
together, both chief priests and scribes; and they led him away to their
council, and they said,
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
67 "If you are the Christ, tell us."
But he said to them, "If I tell you, you will
not believe;
68 and if I ask you, you will not answer.
69 But from now on the Son of man shall be
seated at the right hand of the power of God."
70 And they all said, "Are you the Son of God, then?" And he said
to them, "You say that I am."
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
63 Now the men who were holding Jesus mocked him and beat him;
64 they also blindfolded him and asked him, "Prophesy! Who is it
that struck you?"
65 And they spoke many other words against him, reviling him. |
9. The Last Words From the Cross
Matthew 27:45-56
l
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land
until the ninth hour.
l
l
l
46 And about the ninth
hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, "Eli,
Eli, la'ma sabach-tha'ni?" that is, "My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me?"
l
47 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, "This man is calling
Eli'jah."
48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with
vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink.
49 But the others said, "Wait, let us see whether Eli'jah will come
to save him."
50 And Jesus cried again with a loud voice
and yielded up his spirit.
l
l
51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top
to bottom; and the earth shook, and the rocks were split;
52 the tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who
had fallen asleep were raised,
53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went
into the holy city and appeared to many.
54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch
over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with
awe, and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!"
l
l
l
l
l
55 There were also many women there, looking on from afar, who had
followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him;
56 among whom were Mary Mag'dalene, and Mary the mother of James
and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zeb'edee. |
Mark 15:33-41
l
33 And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the
whole land until the ninth hour.
l
l
l
34 And at the ninth hour
Jesus cried with a loud voice, "E'lo-i, E'lo-i,
la'ma sabach-tha'ni?" which means, "My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me?"
35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, "Behold, he is calling
Eli'jah."
36 And one ran and, filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on
a reed and gave it to him to drink,
l
l
saying, "Wait, let us see whether Eli'jah will come to take him
down."
37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and
breathed his last.
l
l
38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that he thus
breathed his last, he said,
l
"Truly this man was the Son of God!"
l
l
l
l
l
40 There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary
Mag'dalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and
Salo'me,
41 who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered to
him; and also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem. |
Luke 23:44-49
l
44 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over
the whole land until the ninth hour,
45 while the sun's light failed; and the curtain of the temple was
torn in two.
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
46 Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, "Father,
into thy hands I commit my spirit!" And having said this he breathed
his last.
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
47 Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God,
and said,
l
l
l
"Certainly this man was innocent!"
48 And all the multitudes who assembled to see the sight, when they
saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.
49 And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him
from Galilee stood at a distance and saw these things. |
10. The Great Commission
Matthew 28:16-20
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which
Jesus had directed them.
17 And when they saw him they worshiped him; but some doubted.
18 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority
in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all that I have
commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age." |
